Ok guys, I usually don’t blog about anything that is not celebrity
or food related but this is too good to resist. I came across these
numbers on the latest issue of Brandweek
magazine and I just want to share them with you. They are population
and economic figures that show the growing importance of Asians as a
consumer group in the U.S.
1) There are approximately 15 million people of Asian descent in the
U.S. as of 2006—this represents 5% of the total population. It also
represents a 25% growth between 2000 and 2006.
2) 88% of Asian Americans are comprised by six specific ethnic
segments (24% or 3.6 million Chinese, 20% of 2.9 million Filipinos, 18%
of 2.7 million Indians, 11% or 1.6 million Vietnamese, 10% or 1.5
million Koreans and 8% or 1.2 million Japanese)
3) The median household income for Asian Americans in 2006 was $64K,
more than $11K ahead of non-Hispanic Caucasian Americans, and $15K
ahead of total population.
4) Three quarters of the Asian American households earn at least
$75K per year—only half of the average U.S. households are in the same
income bracket.
5) 48% of Asians hold a BA degree or higher (30% for non-Hispanic white, 17% for African Americans and 12% for Hispanics)
6) Total annual Asian purchasing power in 2007 was $459 Billion,
representing a 70.8% growth between 2000 and 2007 (a lot of this money
went to Louis Vuitton I bet).
7) The projected future Asian purchasing power is $670 Billion in 2012.
8) California, New York and Texas contain about half of all Asians
(52%). There are about 1.7M Asians in the Los Angeles area and the New
York/New Jersey area.
So you see, we are not a meek little group. We are commanding the
attention of the U.S. companies with our growing population and
purchasing power. I am sure Alvin Lin will agree with me on this.
WE’RE ASIAN, WE’RE PATIENT, AND WE’RE TAKING OVER THE NATION! Just kidding…. not!

Andrew, yes self loathing and mass media conditioned White Worship is a sad thing to see, among Asian and Asian American youth. I’m aware of it because I used to be guilty of it myself.
I think for starters, Asians should start dating their own. I have all these single Asian girlfriends who only want date/marry white guys. Even my single asian gay friends are the same. I just want to shake them sometimes!
jekki greater numbers are nice, but with the 15 million already here, if we could get a majority of the under 40 aa population to vote asian american and buy quality asian american films and music, it would make a HUGE difference in how marketing and entertainment and political groups catered to us.
so basically what everyone is saying is that we need numbers. so breaking it down even further, we need to make lots of babies and import our families.

Thanks for raising awareness, Andrew. Our country is changing, and Asians are making their voices heard. I remember reading in an interview that Sung Kang did 2 years ago: economic studies made no differentiation among white and Asian consumers. With 5% of the population, that could change.
“Andrew...one quick comment, and please don’t take offense.... I love the fact that you posted this blog about these statistics, but why use a picture of Asians from like 150 years ago? One of the major issues facing Asian-Americans is the perpetual perception that we are foreigners here. Using images like the one above in the context of discussing modern day AA purchasing power doesn’t help change that perception…”
Ha ha… no offence taken, Phil. I used the pic because I thought it was classic chic. Will change it to my face perhaps.

Now i see a reason why your government is trying so hard to block the Asians’ visit to US by making it difficult on the visit Visa. Because they are affraid. They are more affraid rather than to appreciate the contribution by the American Asian.
i think the gap between all the ethnicities is closing with the 2nd generation of asian americans
there’s a lot of clubs and conferences in high school that bunch all asians together. but a lot of them dont care about their past or anything because their parents didnt teach them
One of the major issues is that there are too many things that divide Asian-Americans:
- Different ethnicities and languages (Chinese vs. Korean vs. Japanese vs. Thai vs. etc)
- Different levels of “time here” (new immigrant vs. 1st gen vs. 2nd gen vs. etc)
- Different experiences in “being American” (urban vs. suburban, blue collar vs. white collar)
Because of all these different things, it’s very hard to find solidarity among Asian-Americans...there isn’t a focused way for us to find common-enough-ground in order to unite on issues. Of course, you can argue that lots of other ethnicities have some of these issues as well, but I don’t know if the language issues are as significant, and our “time here” for a lot of our community is still relatively young.

shes so stupid....i cant believe so many people idolize her
more asians would buy into the asian style if there were more role models. even though paris is a dits, shes still a big hit in asia because of her blue eyes and blonde hair
Yes, great stats.
However, our powerful potential consumer power will only be relevant if Asian Americans BUY and CONSUME racially, meaning you support other quality Asian American images or artists or whatever.
For those who think this is extreme, consider 95% of Blacks vote Obama, 2/3 of women vote Hillary, and movies specifically put in Black or Hispanic or White actors in order to make money. They don’t put in Asian images except to pander to nonAsian audiences through demeaning Asian male images or objectified Asian female images, because they don’t see an Asian American market.
