500 artists from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan joined together on June 1, 2008 for a fundraising campaign for the Sichuan Earthquake victims. Although the artists gathered on stage at 2:00pm, the event didn’t begin till 2:28pm – the time the earthquake had hit Sichuan on May 12. The show lasted till 10pm (8 hours) raising $34,984,458. As a final performance, the various artists performed “Promise” a song written by Andy Lau to show the victims that they promise to continue to show their long term support. Not only was the song touching but the music video featured various clips of the earthquake victims and not to mention Jackie Chan singing.
More than 20,000 people attended the event wearing yellow wrist bands. In addition, all the TV stations decided to set aside their differences by sending out representatives to host the event and telecast the event simultaneously. That only proves how strong China has become over this tragedy. The program will also broadcast in Asia, the United States and Europe to raise more funds.
Some of the artists include Andy Lau, Jackie Chan, Sammi Cheng, Shu Qi and even the older generation joined like Sam Hui. Throughout the event, the artists repeated the same phrase “The earthquake will not shatter our spirit, whereas it upholds the true love within us.”
Update: Lyrics were written by Andy Lau but was composed by the lead singer of a HK band called “Beyond”. Beyond - 海闊天空 Thank you Andrew :D

Cool. A lot more people than the groups that come together for tragic events like this in the US. I just don’t like when people do music videos for it, everyone either tries to look sad or sincere (even when people have good intentions, it looks fake).
$35 mil US dollars? That’s like billions in Chinese money. That’s should help for a while.
i cried watching the video :(
Thanks Andrew
I updated the post
Great post, Lan.
The lyrics of the song was written by Andy Lau but the song was composed by the lead singer of a HK band called “Beyond” that was really hot in the 80s. The lead singer accidentally fell to his death while performing on stage. It was tragic. Here’s the clip of the original song. The one singing was the lead singer:

well im sure a lot of celebs would give up their time freely for something like this
it was obvious that they would have one. im surprised they put one together so fast

i had no idea they were having a concert
probably old and new and not that popular to famous
where did 500 artists ome from? even across all 3 there cant be that many
