Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) has been a popular franchise for Asia. It was first an anime in Japan in the 90’s and then eventually Taiwan picked it up but called it Meteor Garden which produced the band F4. It worked out great for them so Japan decided to give it go and it lasted for 2 seasons which doesn’t happen often because most Japanese TV shows don’t make it past the first season unless they’re really good. Now even though the story is over, there’s a movie coming out later this summer.

If you didn’t know, Hana Yori Dango is about a poor girl named Makino Tsukushi who goes to an elite private school in Japan. At this school, there’s a band of 4 sexy, super rich, powerful guys that rule the school by the name of F4 (Flower Four): Doumyouji Tsukasa (leader), Hanazawa Rui (emo kid/best friend of Domyouji), Nishikado Soujiroh (serious one) and Mimasaka Akira (reasonable one). Well Makino one day gets into a fight with Doumyouji that eventually leads to him falling in love with her. The show focuses on the hardships they have to face in order to be with each other. It’s a very cute love story and one I’ve seen over and over again.

So now, Korea joins the band wagon and casting has started. Guess who couple possibly plays my favorite character, Hanazawa Rui? Kim freaking Hyun Joong. 

In the Japanese version, Oguri Shun played Hanazawa Rui and might I say he was a fine piece of meat but now the torch is being passed to Kim Hyun Joong of SS501. You might remember him from kdrama “We Got Married” with Hwang Bo, the guy who said he would pick Hwang Bo over Hyori Lee. Please, what a kiss ass. But anyways with his dyed hair he does seem to resemble Oguri Shun a lot which is a good thing for him because I was a bit disappointed when I heard about it. I was hoping Lee Junki or Hero Jaejoong would get the part but with Lee Junki’s going off the army and Hero just off from the recent tour, there are only the leftovers. He was picked based on his acting abilities on “We Got Married” but with SS501 in Japan and his current TV show, there’s no guarantee that he’ll get the part.

The other 3 members will also be kpop stars. Supposedly Big Bang’s T.O.P could get the part of Domyouji.

I was a big fan of Hana Yori Dango when it was just an anime. It’s grown so much now. Wonder if the kdrama version is gonna be the same as the jdrama version…
