Christopher D. Vu admits as a child, he was jealous of children who received music lessons. It seems that soul filled music was always deeply embedded within his heart. While fully enrolled as an engineering student at MIT, Vu joined a a-cappella group called the MIT Logarhythms. This extracurricular activity of stage performances helped fuel his fire for musical experience and touring with the MIT group proved to be very rewarding. Soon he purchased a digital piano, teaching himself how to play and write music. It was attending an Alicia Keys concert that inspired him along the path of a musical career.
Making of an Idol Audition: Making a Magic Potion does not Last.
In the Fall of 2002, Vu decided to try out for the Fox Reality show American Idol and took a week off of from his studies at MIT to fly to Austin, Texas. He first did try to attend the New York auditions but missed receiving one of the access wristbands. Once in Austin, aided by the Kappa Delta Phi sorority, Vu prepared to be apart of the people camping out for idol access. As he became camper/squatter he was given number #187 and told to wait, which lasted 36 Texas-heat-infested hours. Vu sang for only a minute during the first round of auditioning, then got a chance to sing for executive producer Jon Entz. The particularly nerve-rattling experience was due to a list of songs producers were tired from. So his original song choice ”At Last” by Etta James was changed to “I Wish” by Stevie Wonder. The only issue was he hadn’t fully memorized the lyrics and when he sang, he forgot the words. Despite this mistake, Vu was among 250 others to make it past this first test. The final audition in Austin was for the infamous idol judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson. Vu sang “I Wish”, with no yey or ney coming from Simon Cowell who refused (Simon you are a class A idiot for Passing on Vu). And since we are all familiar we know with a vote of 2 he moved on to Hollywood round. Vu was one in about 15 out of 2,000 that moved on to the final round from Austin and one of 200 that made it to Hollywood.
“I never imagined a voice like that coming out of a body like yours”-Randy Jackson
During this time, Vu’s family had no clue of his whereabouts in Austin. Vu opted not to worry his family whom were going through difficulties. Vu’s father at the time was injured in a auto accident. It was the show’s producers that had contact Vu’s parents to convince his mother that he actually made it to the Hollywood. Disappointingly Chris Vu was cut from American Idol just prior to the final cut for TV.
Disappearing is not this Magic Mans Forte
Vu returned and finished his educational career and graduated from MIT Currently he travels around the nation living up to his stage name creating magic with his voice. According to his website he is billed as the see-it-to-believe-it artist, they say he deceives his appearance… but in my opinion what wizard would reveal his secrets on looks alone?
As a artist he embraces a sensual passion that can only be found in singers like Thicke and JT. His intense rapture has a great potential to become a soulful classic like Barry White, Journey and Luther Vandross or for a better term Vudoo can produce panty-removing-baby-making-songs! He driven by a desire to show he belongs in music and his raw talent and work ethic is carving him just the right place for him. The R&B Shaman is no illusion Vudoo Soul will put a spell on you.
