In eastern New Orleans there is a town called Versailles that was founded by Vietnamese refugees. After Hurricane Katrina blew through their town and they picked up the pieces, they had to fight against the city’s choice of putting a landfill just a few miles from their town that they cultivated with so much love. They stood and fought their ground. Now their struggle and joyous victory will be turned into a full-length feature by filmmaker S. Leo Chiang. Please click on the following links included in this blog to learn more about these courageous residents story.

A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES is a full-length documentary about Versailles, a community in eastern New Orleans first settled by Vietnamese refugees. After Hurricane Katrina, Versailles residents have impressively risen to the challenges by returning and rebuilding before most neighborhoods in New Orleans, only to have their homes threatened by a new government-imposed toxic landfill just two miles away. A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES will recount the empowering story of how this group of people, who has already suffered so much in their lifetime, turns a devastating disaster into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future.

S. Leo Chiang’s “Rough Cut” that gives in depth detail about his documentary A Village Called Versailles that includes a 15 minute video of the Versailles documentary. It is scheduled to be released during the beginning of the year 2009.

The Vietnamese community was and still is deeply affected by Hurricane Katrina, and they were under presented in the news. I’m glad you posted this and spreading the news out like this.

I’m glad I did too! So many minorities are under-represented in the news daily and it infuriates me.

That would explain why they were mainly effected. ;O

A lot of Viets are in New Orleans.

shes pretty!

Too bad more Asians aren’t like this.

Thanks guys! It really is such an inspiring story. It goes to show you that silence does nothing. If you believe in something passionately, you have to stand up and fight for it. Stand proud.

Great story Mai.

These stories are really sad.

People usually do stick together.

Versailles is also a town in Kentucky, near where I went to high school. Common place name. But you know, the French colonized Vietnam, so it’s no surprise that they’s pick a French place name.

Mai, this is a great story. Thanks for sharing.

I thought France?

It’s cool that they’re able to rebuild after something so difficult.

Isn’t Versailles a town in Italy?
