On Friday October 3, 2008, James Yee and other notables attended an Obama Victory Fund event at the home of Laurie and Scott Oki in Bellevue, WA. The Asian American Finance Committee also headed the event.

Representative Mike Honda was scheduled to attend this event, but he was unable to attend, because he was voting on the Emergency Bill to bail out Wall Street. The first person that spoke at this event was Washington State Senator, Maria Cantwell. She talked about why Obama is good for Washington State and for America. There were several people who were there from the Microsoft community. It was not surprising, because Microsoft is headquartered in Seattle.

The second person to speak at the event was Honarary Gary Locke, former Washington State governor. He spoke about how the Bush administration has locked up people based on mere suspicions. He then recognized James Yee using him as an example of the injustices that people have faced under the Bush administration. Hon. Locke talked about the oppression that James Yee faced, how James Yee was sent to prison and threatened with the dealth penalty, only to be exonerated later. Hon. Locke said how can things like this happen in our country. We have to change our country to make sure things like this do not happen.

Asians have seen things like this happen to them before. For example, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, banned Chinese from coming into United States and countless other acts of oppressions against Asians in America. We have come a long way, but there is still so much more to do to ensure everyone is treated equally and fairly.

The Asian American community seems to relate better to Obama over McCain. And it was evident from the event that many in the Asian American community believe that Obama’s approach to running the government will be much better.

Jame Yee also caught up with an old friend, Dale Minami, who is from San Francisco, but was also attending the event. James Yee said they remembered Dale, because of his work in overturning the Fred Korematsu case, involving Japanese internment. http://www.trackedinamerica.org/timeline/pearl_harbor/korematsu/

Dale Minami and James Yee spoke on a panel together a few years ago in Philadelphia during NAPABA-National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. http://www.napaba.org/napaba/showpage.asp?code=home

There was encouragement to have some fun and celebrate at the event, because they consider it a pre-victory party in relation to the upcoming election on November 4th of this year.

Did you attend? I can’t tell. ><

This James Yee guy must be your idol.

Isn’t it obvious? haha This is cool though.

No Sakura, I didn’t attend. You can’t tell raspberry hehe

Khmere: no he’s not my idol, I don’t take any human as my idol. I would like to say that I honor or have great respect for certain human beings.

I really hope Obama wins.

I like him better than McCain but I don’t know if I completely support him.

Thanks for the update. I got your message too.

Charissima: Why don’t you completely support Obama?

Charissima - 10/05/08 10:14 pm

I like him better than McCain but I don’t know if I completely support him.

I tried to like him better than McCain but I can’t everytime I try I see a lack of history and a guy with a white mother who says he is black. Maybe its because I cannot help being classified as a white woman but If I gave birth to a baby I would hope he/she remembers me and my ethnicity which I passed on to him/her a bit instead of having his/her people say “First Fillintheblank this or that”. Its a total slap in the face to her and to humanity when he has to classify himself when he should be proud to be apart of it all.

The race card thing gets me… but then again im Hypocritical… if Se7en were running for president Id be all Dae Han Min Gook!

great story
go james yee! and obama lol

Yeah it’s sometimes rough when a child is bi-or multi-racial and for the sake of society they check ONE box, because many people are looked down upon for not being HOMOGENEOUS. Some get the question, “yeah but what ARE YOU?” It eats at their self-esteem. So they walk around feeling like some alien or it would be better off if they weren’t born, worst case scenario. Many times it doesn’t matter if you’re mixed with say the same race but different ethnicity. For example: Japanee/Chinese or Thai/Indian. You can face prejudices as well. I agree with you as well that people who are mixed shouldn’t just recognize just one parent, but should recognize both of them and everything in between.

These boxes have to stop. The more we support putting ourselves in catagories the more reason we have to be separate. I want Obama to say he is beyond color and race. He should be proud of that and show the world that a person like him is the future. To show people are human beings above all things.... Also I want him to show respect to his mother who raised him.. his biological father wasn’t even in his life. Every time the news classifies him as Black is wrong. He has true ethnicity and tradition its more than skincolor or eyeshape.

I am Italian by ethnicity My culture and nationality and traditions arent white theya re italian but my box is white. Its unfair, leads us on the wrong path and im tired of it.

Ok end rant scene now.. sorry i was off tangent.

LOL Mia! Oh a really good rant is good for you every once in a while. It proves that you are a human being and that you’re full of life! Yeah the boxes should end. Good point, he’s father wasn’t there for him, his mama raised him and raised him wonderfully, I will add. A lot of the NEED to classify yourself seems to come a lot from minorities. It’s like a double edged sword. One minute you’re talking proud of your ethnicity, next minute you get angry cause people want to box you into “that box” and say “well you’re really not American since you’re not of European descent”.

One example I have is when I was working at my school’s International Education Center in the past. The student’s were going a trip overseas. All of the minority students checked the box for “nationality” as “Black, Hispanic, and so and so”. I corrected them and said “you’re American, are you not? So put down American for your nationality” So they did and they were like “ohhhh yeahhh, you’re right!” So it’s a very touchy subject.

Oh the other half to that story is that all of the White students automatically put down American in the nationality box. I thought that was an interesting observation.

Ethnicity and Nationality for me is Italian and American. Only because I was married to an Italian from Italy and well have dual citizenship now. Its weird cause now everything matches.

Do you plan to live in Italy?

Dual citizenship is way cool. Though I was born in Germany, it was on American soil, so I don’t think I have German citizenship as well, I think I would have to claim it if I can at all.

You should try. I already asked for my EU passport but since my divorce there is more paperwork. But I would sooooooo love to have that EU passport and just be able to hop and skip to each country. I so need to go backpacking.

Barack has an Asian sister or technically his half-sister. Maya Soetoro-Ng Half-Indonesian half-white.  He grew up in Indonesia when he was young. I am Asian-Indonesian American and I will vote for him and I hope you all who are registered voters will help elect him Obama for the next US president for all the people.

Barack Obama is my choice for a candidate this November election. I’m glad his sister is active in the political community.

I love this picture of her and her family:

Her husband looks like some HK celebrity. haha

Here are some links Maimounah for Asian American support for Barack and his sister Maya and brother in-law Konrad.  19,18 days and counting till election day and hopefully the polls are correct about his leads on McCain.  Make it count on Nov. 4 and vote for Obama. He and his family inspires me to do better in life and I hope his inaugaration in January as the next President will inspire you all.
