All these news about the recent Korean celebrity suicides made me think about the past. My mind went down memory lane, and then I decided to Youtube videos of my favourite ahjumma style songs. Or at least the old songs from when I enjoyed as a child. One of the songs I entered was 인디안 인형처럼 (Indian Inhyung Chu-lum = Like an Indian Doll) originally done by Nami.
This song drove me insane for a good two and a half years. Why? I visited my best friend in Guam in 2004. We went to a karaoke / no rae bang there to sing, and she sang this song that I’ve heard all the time but never knew the name of. Well, I completely forgot to get the title and everything, including the song itself. I couldn’t remember how it went! After two and a half years, I finally remembered it and asked an older acquaintance if she knew the title and the artist. She did.
I’m glad I brought this song back into my life. It is catchy and fun to listen and dance to. I kind of want to say that she, along with Seotaji, probably was the precursor to modern KPop. Because I can guarantee you that until at least 1994, I only recall those ahjumma style singers dominating the Korean music industry, but who knows really? I only watched what my mum had on when I was in early elementary school. Oh, but there was this one other smexy singer, but he’s another story.
Anyway, check out the original and the two covers done by Finkl and Bada respectively. Some of you might have already heard the cover version, but now here’s your chance to be enlightened by the original one! Me? I like the original one better. I usually do. Covers are not my thing. But if I had to choose, I’ll take Bada’s version over Finkl’s version.
