Apop has expanded beyond its borders in recent years. While it is still a slow process, it is a growing one, and many of Apop’s elite have already built a path on unfamiliar grounds for future crossovers.

Coco Lee is a talented, beautiful singer. She immigrated to the U.S. at ten-years-old, developing a strong foundation for her future music career. Her OST’s for the movies Runaway Bride, entitled “Before I Fall in Love,” and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, entitled “A Love before Time,” should have made her an international superstar; however, the crossover was unsuccessful. Although she released her English LP Exposed in 2005, all promotional efforts were in Asia.

Utada Hikaru is well-known for her OST’s, Simple and Clean (Hikari) and Santuary (Passion), for Kingdom Hearts. As such, she gained popularity in the U.S., which paved the road for her future crossover. She released her English album Exodus, which was partly co-written and produced by Timbaland. Regardless, her “Easy Breezy” single was not up to par. Many of her fans didn’t receive the release well, on account of her image change.

Rain was another Apop star that also proved unsuccessful in his crossover. With a great start in 2006, wherein his concert at MSG sold out 2 nights in a row, he later ran into legal trouble, further clouding his career (no pun intended). Rain has yet to give us an English album and doesn’t seem to be furthering his U.S. debut.

Se7en had already set the groundwork for his crossover with R&B singer Amerie; however, his English album has been in the works for two years now. Although he had leaked his singles, they’ve been remixed numerous times, with collaborations from Fabolous, Three Six Mafia and Darkchild. Having been in the dark for the past few months, he has finally came out and will be performing in Washington.

Alhough past crossovers have ended in failure or are unprogressive, I still have strong hope for BoA in her crossover and for those in the future.

Uh?...haha

Go BoA, You’re the best!.

BoA Fan Club Peru.

Rain did for awhile but gave up and is now working on his Korean music career.

I didn’t know that either....utada is talented but during her american debut she changed her music style a lot and kept downplaying her success in Japan like it was nothing. Those easy breezy lyrics weren’t offensive...just dumb. But, I also didn’t like how in some interviews she said some dumb things like “oh, here in america I can wear skirts! In japan I can’t...” b/c it was ridiculous. for coco lee, nobody promoted her...isn’t Rain trying to focus on an acting career in the USA? I don’t know what se7en is doing...he keeps saying that he’s debuting but I wish he would do it already (and i still haven’t heard that song he did with amerie! lol! I should look for it).

Who was the first person to cross over?

wow thanks for the info

I’m sure it will. I mean she is the Best of Asia. raspberry I’ll be so devastated if she doesn’t.

I really wish Utada Luck this time around. Lets hope she takes a lesson from the last time and doesnt over sexify herself again. her style is such a innocent and strong persona.. it shows in her vocals… she didnt need all the extras. Britney and Paris need those extras cause without them they are just boring talentless singers but the sensuality with Utada is in her voice and musical ability. She touches the people with the chemistry she makes in music! She can melt people just by belting out notes.

I really hope Utada does well and doesnt become another Seiko Matsuda who has english albums just for the sake of having english albums

I have strong hopes for Utada too. She could’ve brought the Asian flag to the US long ago if she only did succeed. She has all the qualities of a diva. Talking about talent, she can get past a lot of the established artists in the US if only given the chance. Now, it’s BoA’s turn to bring that flag to the US, I hope everything would turn out good for them.

Good to hear she’s retrying. It’s not like she doesn’t have talent or bad English skills.

I had high hopes for him.

She’s been working on the album for about a year now. It was announced back in September by her record label that we should expect her album by March 2009. I’m crossing my fingers for her to do well and I think she has the best potential along with BoA right now as she is already fluent in English. U-blog is a great source for Hikki news as well. Whenever anything new comes up (especially relating to her US activities) they always have info.

Seems like Rain gave up.

Whoa really? Is she just releasing an English album or is she going to redebut?

I’m surprised you guys don’t know this. But Hikaru Utada is releasing another english album in the Spring of 2009.

BoA is much better than coco lee and utada hikaru. BoA is a real talent on music. She is the best dancer, singer and clever girl!

Did Rain give up the US market?

I wonder if Utada will try again. She still has tons of talent! I think mebe work with different ppl this time.

Sadly Hikki did not make it, but I have strong hopes that BoA will be the one to open the doors to America, just like how she did it in Japan.

I think he would go hungry. haha jk!

His chicken breasts helped his internaional power go away LOL! just kidding

He is still hot.. I think he would look hot in a uniform!

It was something like the Cultural Department of Ministry and they wanted to prevent him from going because he’s an international star and helps promote Korea. So they believed that if he went to the military, his international power would go away.

^^how? why?  He’s still a singer (wait...a dancer actually) afterall smile

They tried to prevent Rain from having to full fill his military duty.

I wonder what either of them will do when it comes time for them to go to the army.

Yeah I liked Se7en’s dancing and music over Rain.
