I started out with the intention of writing the Top 10 Moments of 2008. You just don’t know how much has happened in a year until you sit down and have to write about it. Below are 10 distinctive moments for me in 2008, but trust me, there’s so much more that happened. If your favorite 2008 moment didn’t make the list, don’t be sad. There’s always next year!



Rain on The Colbert Show

Rain brings Korean contraband to the US – specifically his balls. Stephen Colbert has no choice but to step up and be “dancing in Korean… dancing in Korean…”

Jay Chou Releases “Capricorn”

“Capricorn” was leaked all over the internet for weeks in advance, yet still sold 1 million albums in one week. Jay proves himself to be the “President” once again! Ningin wraps up 2008 with free tickets to Jay Chou’s concert at Mohegan Sun Arena, USA.



“The Cho Show” hits American TV

More than 10 years after an unsuccessful attempt to put the first Asian-American family on American TV, Margaret Cho returned with “The Cho Show” on VH1. Americans of all types are tuning into the Korean-American comedian’s part reality show, part scripted comedy about herself, her parents and her 3-foot-10-inch assistant Megan Walsh-Boyle. I TiVo it and fast forward past the commercials.



Edison Chen Sex Photo Scandal

Edison Chen shows that he may be the Cpop casanova but he’s no tech-savy guy as he drops off his Mac laptop for repairs with some 1,300 sexually explicit pics. Among the photographed are Gillian Chung Yan-tung, Bobo Chan Man-woon, Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi, Rachel Ngan Wing-sze, Mandy Chen Yu-ju, Candice Chan Si-wai, and Vincy Yeung Wing-ching. Some people say that even bad publicity is good publicity, but those “some” people are wrong.



Big Bang Confirms USA Tour

Big Big announce they’re coming to the US – or are they? Now speculation runs rampant that there was a Korean-English misinterpretation and they’re only coming for vacation in 2009. Say it ain’t so!



Stationmaster Tama Saves the Wakayama

Who is this Stationmaster Tama that saved the Wakayama Electric Railway Company? Who brought in ¥1.1 billion to the local economy around Kishi Station? Who was granted honorary knighthood in Wakayama Prefecture? Well, he’s a cat. (You can say “neko” if it sounds fancier.)



Wonder Girls perform in New York City for Chuseok

New York City gets a free outdoor Wonder Girls concert. JYP, J-Lim and G Seoul also show up and perform. Great reasons to be thankful for Chuseok in 2008! Missed the performance the first time? Watch it here. And here.



Zhang Ziyi Gets Engaged to Vivi Nevo

European guys all over the world cried into their beers while watching the news at their local Irish Pub.



Beijing Olympics

The world comes to China, and China welcomes the World with the biggest and most extravagant Olympic ceremonies in history. Whether the Friendlies, or Fuwa as they were officially renamed, are super cute or super uncool is never resolved.



BoA Comes to America

Ningin.com sits down with the legendary BoA herself during her New York City visit. BoA fans everywhere confirm what they’ve known all along – America is about to get hit with something B-I-G. (Btw MTV Iggy, we’re still waiting for your BoA videos… it’s almost 2009…)

Rain on the Colbert Report was definitely one of my favorite moments last year!  The dance-off was so classic!


Eh I think she could have done better.


The thing is Zhang looks so happy and Vivi looks like he adores her.


Aviv “Vivi” Nevo (born 1965[1]) is an Israeli venture capitalist who is a major shareholder in Time Warner.[2][3] His venture capital firm, NV Investments, is believed to invest in technology companies worldwide, and is said to have been an early backer of The Weinstein Company[4], and the largest individual shareholder in Time Warner.[1]

Nevo is averse to publicity, and hires a public relations firm to maintain a low public profile.[4] In July, 2008 Nevo confirmed long-running rumors of an engagement to Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi.[5]

Nevo was born in Romania and moved to Tel Aviv, Israel as a baby, with his father a chemical engineer and his mother an anesthesiologist. It is believed he built his fortune up from his initial $10 million inheritance.[1]

He probably has an accent to or maybe he knows Chinese?

my question is - i didn’t know her english was that good?  or is vivi nevo some amazing linguist?

True that. Being inclined towards older men doesn’t necessarily mean you’re into their money. But Hoc, you’re right to point out that Vivi isn’t simply a mature man fit for a mature woman: he’s a crazy rich media powerhouse. Who knows though--they all live in a much different world from us, lol.

I don’t know how well her English is now, but the language barrier didn’t pose much of a trouble for Gong Li and Maggie Cheung back when they were swinging with European dudes. I’ll be one of the first to defend interracial unions, but I dunno… this one totally rubs me the wrong way. What do they talk about other than the loads of cash they both sit on? It just smells like money, honestly.

I’m actually surprised that Zhang Ziyi married someone like 40 years older than her. I just thought that she already had a lot of money…

The opening ceremony was amazing.
