In watching many Asian film, I have learned the names of many of their actors that have become my favorites and household names. The “best actor of the year” list that I have composed were based on some of the most prestigious and/or popular film award festivals in each country listed for the male categories, although there are dozens of Asian film festivals out there. I have also added a few comments of my own about the actors.
KOREA: Kim Yoon-seok from The Chaser
He was born on January 21, 1967. His filmography includes: The Happy Life, Tazza, Like A Virgin, Running Wild, and the Thank You My Life t.v. series.
JAPAN: Yoshioka Hidetaka from Always: Zoku Sanchome no Yuhi
He was born on August 12, 1970 in Saitama, Japan. He played Tora-San’s nephew in the Tora-san film series. He played in the movies: The Sea is Watching (Umi wa Miteita), The Hidden Blade (Kakushi Ken Oni no Tsume) and in the t.v. series Kita no Kuni Kara and Dr. Koto Shinryojo. He is also a singer.
I have watched the film The Sea is Watching earlier this year. I saw the movie The Hidden Blade last week which I enjoyed immensely. In my opinion it was a story about the romance between two forbidden lovers. It really touched my heart.
TAIWAN: Zhang Hanyu from The Assembly
He was born in Beijing, China on December 19, 1964. He has played in the movies Wind, Proof of Identity, The Equation of Love and Death, At the Expense of Xi Sheng, Look for a Star, A World Without Thieves, and Cell Phone.
CHINA: Jet Li from The Warlords
Jet Li was born as Li Lianjie in Beijing, China. He is known for his roles in Once Upon a Time In China series, Fong Sai-Yuk films, Fearless, Black Mask, Hero and Shaolin Temple series. He has also starred in the western movies: Lethal Weapon 4, Romeo Must Die The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Kiss of the Dragon, The One, Cradle 2 the Grave, and War. Jet Li is a practitioner of the martial arts wushu which he began with the Beijing Wushu Team, “an athletic group organized to perform martial arts forms during the All China Games.”
Jet Li is also one of my favorite actors of all time, because he is so passionate on the screen. Watching him perform his martial arts is a beauty to the eye.
INDIA: Soumitra Chatterjee from Podokkhep
He was born in Kolkata, India in 1935. Soumitra graduated with honours in Bengali literature from the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta. Soumitra’s film debut came in 1959 with Satyajit Ray’s movie Apur Sansar. He has also been active in Bengali theatre as an actor, playwright and director. He has received the ‘Officier des Arts et Metiers’, the highest award for arts given by the French government, and a lifetime achievement award from Italy. He received the prestigious Padma Bhushan award from the President of India in 2004. Soumitra Chatterjee
THAILAND: Akara Amarttayakul from Muay Thai Chaiya
He was born in Bangkok, Thailand and he attended school in the United States at the age of 11 until he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He went back to his native Thailand where he starred in the movies: Mae Bia(Snake lady), Saving Private Tootsie , and Jom kha mung wei in which he played a policeman who tracks down a criminal using black magic. The film won several awards in Thailand.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: B.D. Wong from Law and Order
B.D. Wong is a native of San Francisco, California. He has been a regular on the show Law and Order: SVU as Dr. George Huang, the voice of General Shang on the Disney Movie Mulan, he was also a regular on the HBO series Oz as Father Ray Mukada, and he has a starring role as Song Liling in the Broadway play Madame Butterfly.
B.D. Wong’s filmography list goes on for days as he is such a remarkable, talented actor. B.D. Wong has always been one of my favorite actors of all time. I have always been thrilled to see him casted in so many different movies and films in diverse roles. I look forward to seeing many more American actors and actresses of Asian descent casted in such diverse roles.

I know! I don’t know but I’m worried! Eddie is in a hard spot! I can’t wait to see the next episode! I wish that Eddie would also move elsewhere with his parents, but I’m guessing when he was talking to that female detective about them only being able to stay in K-town is due to their immigrant status? Maybe if they move out they’ll face legal problems or maybe they just don’t want to move out!
I’m all for doing a post together on the Crash message board!
we need to do a post together. I just saw the latest episode on in demand. Im freaked his whole family is in danger cause he gave a statement? Where are they going to hide?
I will say this. Certain characters are getting very repetative. They need to cut out some of that fat. THe housewife and the construction worker need to go. Their lives are boring and I really dont care she married an idiot who decided to burn down his investment.
I like the cop story line, brian tee’s character and Cesare somewhat although he is getting old quick.
Same here. He plays his character right on the “tee”! Hehe! You see the last episode? He’s trying to get money to become a doctor, but his past keeps biting him in his touchey, I really hope society gives him another chance. I love watching him on the screen!
I know he is trying to stick to going to a medical school to be by his halmoni and appa. Its that stay in ktown kinda deal… He can go anywhere in the US and get a education with his background as a emt but he wants to stay in south cali. Why not st louis or houston or new york.. why does it have to be south cali.
lol No ty.

Ok Mia, I know you’re gonna jump in here when ya can, you’re experiencing technical difficulties
hehe Ok tonight’s episode was really good! Brian was caught between two rocks and two hard places with getting some justice against Park! He’s all alone, he’s trying his best to stay on the straight path, leaving his dark past behind him, and protect his family at the same time. Will someone give Brian a chance? Let’s hope so!
Mia did you see Brian in the movie Finishing the Game? OMG he cracked me up in it! hehe!

Brian Tee is really amazing in Crash. I actually watch it only for his characters story line.
Same here Mia! Do you watch it on the t.v. or do you watch it online like me? I think episode 110 comes on this Friday. How about we watch it together? Will you bring the popcorn? hehe

Doesn’t mean he can’t be on TV else where.
I completely agree. I have seen him on t.v. in smaller roles. That would be great to see more Asian men like Tim Kang, Daniel Dae Kim, B.D. Wong and Brian Tee on regular basis on t.v. and the big screen in lead roles. B.D. Wong has done pretty good with himself. Tim Kang has just started in his series The Mentalist. I know it’s also important to portray them as human beings and that they have lives just like every other American.
Daniel Dae Kim,B.D. Wong, and Tim Kang are on non-premium channels which is really good because many Americans still don’t have access to cable, satellite and so forth. I myself don’t have STARZ t.v. so I went to the site to subscribe to it monthly via my computer just so I’d get a chance to see Brian Tee in the Crash series.

You know proAsian, I did a blog on Brian Tee in the series Crash. He’s doing a wonderful job and we should support him. We need more and more Asian males on the t.v. screen and more on the big screen. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion even though it is negative. But we don’t need an Asian male weeded out of a role or out of a television program, because of people’s small minded views. There’s more at stake here, you feel me?

It’s just a rumor? You’re kind of being a bit sensitive.
Why would you think I was being a “bit sensitive”? I am just a “bit curious” about the assumed boredom of “these rumors”. Have you watched the series for yourself?

Isn’t the series going to be canceled?
I believe that is a rumor. This series is very strong and it is unique with a raw flavor to it. I haven’t heard or seen any news about it being canceled.

He will be in 2009! I can’t wait!
He didn’t really act in any big movies this year. Or at least none that I can remember.
