2008 EoTY: Who Had the Best Year »

Many fans are crying out for their Apop idols to cross over and debut in the states, but there has been little effort and success in these unfamiliar grounds. This year, that has changed. In comparison to recent years, there have been quite a few crossovers and like many fans, I’m cheering them on.

So, now I present the crossover highlights of 2008!




JYP Entertainment

JYP has been making waves all year. In February, JYP announced an upcoming tour and a collaboration with Lil’Jon. There were also rumors that there may be an English version of Wonder Girls’ “Tell me.” Shortly after, JYP took the stage in N.Y.C. and in L.A. during early March. The exciting occasion showcased several of his proteges like Wonder Girls, J-Lim, Min and G-soul. Also, with coverage by Ningin, the much loved Wonder Girls were interviewed in September for their Chuseok performance in Flushing, N.Y.C. Not only did the girls show how their own English studies have progressed, but they announced their own concert for next year, in addition to the JYP Tour 2009.



Se7en

Se7en took on N.Y.C. to preview some of the tracks from his upcoming English debut, including “Scandalous” and “Them Girls.” While he has yet to officially debut, he has been promoting himself through performances in various cities including L.A., N.Y.C. and Seattle.



Rain

Though his debut started out rough, he continued to work hard throughout various films, including Speed Racer. The film could have been a wonderful crossover phenomenon for Rain, but the utter failure of the overly hyped movie pushed Rain’s acting premiere under the radar. However, there is hope with his upcoming 2009 movie Ninja Assassin and rumored English album. Also, he was highly entertaining during his brief appearance on The Colbert Report.



BoA Kwon

Last, but not least, BoA Kwon. The long awaited debut of the diva has happened, and so far, so good. She’s made big performances at Times Square N.Y.C. and at the highly attended KIISFM Jingle Ball, alongside Chris Brown. Ningin was also able to interview the pop diva during her stay in N.Y.C., which left many fans in awe of her English skills.



Looking forward to

Teriyaki Boyz - Their Serious Japanese album will be put out by Pharrell’s Star Trak Entertainment label in March.
Utada Hikaru - It has been rumored she will release another English album in 2009.
Jolin Tsai - She has recently signed with Warner Music.

It’s all good Mia! It’s a very lucrative dialogue going on here. Back to that, I really hope we live to see the day that we see Bi, Boa, and the others on the video channels when we switch the tele on just like it is with Brittany Spears,Usher,Nickelback and etc..

You’re late. haha Well Rain already did, and Se7en and JYP haven’t officially yet so really it is just one.

Well this is the end of the year recap. So we are reporting on past happenings.

But actually I was at all these events as they happened.

Rain is a bit of a debate because he only had a part in a movie. It wasnt a full crossover because he was a co-star. Music wise he only had one concert in NY and one in LV.

Otherwise his true crossover has yet to take place.

These are all baby steps. I believe these crossovermoments are testing the waters of what could be,

JYPs crossover is more a milestone then Rain. JYP actually produced for Wil Smith, Naz and other various american artists. His crossover as a producer is highly succesful. BoA’s waves are just getting bigger. Shes becoming a Tsunami of music. THe thing is we need to really pull together and scream at MTV to play her introduction special and her video on AIR!

Se7en well he was in Limbo. The night he was at Hiro was badly organized and not diverse enough for it to make a true mark. Him playing ktown clubs only isnt giving him any true experience either.

I have hope with the video though.

Are you referring to moi? If you are, I have followed the above mentioned artists so called “cross overs” for a long time. In my opinion they have yet to cross over successfully because we are not seeing them on a regular basis on any music program, in particular major ones, or hear them on any radio station on a regular basis. I know Boa has really just begun and I’m hoping that she is able to do that. You see what I mean?

Exactly like I said these are all moments that are paving the road so crossovers become easier.

When ABDC returns they need to get BOA to perform or if AI returns they need to get Se7en to perform… also we need to campaign to ellen to fdo the boa dance.

I really really hope all of these artists will seriously crossover successfully this time. I want to see them on “MTV MTV” and all over the FM and XM radio stations.

I know the ethnic segregation of asians on MTV is getting to me.

I wish IMF was actually a channel that was appreciated more.

That’s a lot of artists that crossed over this year. I thought there were only 1.

These are just the beginnings. Humble beginnings.

They’re releasing their album with him not signed.

So they arent under contract yet ? Hmmmm
