According to one RIAA study, girls actually purchase more music than guys do. So, screaming fan-girls means big bucks (because we girls learn to covet idol related merchandise in our tweens)! With the latest influx of crossover artists, it is a mystery that no boy bands from Asia have begun to, at least, think about breaking into the American market.
Boy bands in the past have had huge success in America using advertising tactics, such as those of The Beatles. For months, local radio personalities would stop what they were playing and say things like ”Get ready, The Beatles are coming.” By the time The Beatles did arrive, they were an instant success. Some fans never even heard a song, but still showed up to greet the British band when they arrived.
Could these kind of advertising gimmicks be used for the benefit of a successful crossover? With super talented and attractive boy bands in Korea, Japan and Taiwan, a successful crossover would be fairly easy. With all the media at the disposal of music companies now, it is a real shame that these boy bands have been silent on breaking through.
I am a firm believer if you play a good song people will like it regardless of whatever language it is in. The proof is in the past with songs like “Sukiyaki” and “Volare.” Someone aired these songs, and they became mega hits. I say it is time to open Pandora’s box and get Big Bang and DBSK to come to America (with or without English)! America is due for a boy band backlash; there is definitely room for an Asian Invasion.
