Academy Award nominations were announced today, revealing a whopping 10 nominations for my favorite of 2008, Slumdog Millionaire. When I said it was gonna be huge, I wasn’t lying. It’s probably a good idea to take my film recommendations from now on. I have Oscar-inspired taste! (I’m kidding. Or am I?) Nominations for Slumdog Millionaire include ‘Best Picture,’ Danny Boyle for ‘Best Director,’ and ‘Best Adapted Screenplay.’

Slumdog Millionaire’s got a solid chance at winning ‘Best Picture.’ Of all nominated films, it’s received the most precursors and critical acclaim. When it picked up the Golden Globe award for ‘Best Drama,’ everyone in the audience seemed rather pleased. Also, this month it was given a PGA (Producers Guild Award) nomination for “Best Adapted Screenplay.” Generally, there’s absolutely no way a film can proceed to win an Academy Award for ‘Best Picture’ without receiving this nomination from the PGA. If not ‘Best Picture,’ it has a great chance at any score/sound related nominations. It’s picked up 2 of the 3 nominations for ‘Best Original Song.’

However, Benjamin Button’s got a case against Slumdog Millionaire with it’s 13 Academy Award nominations. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received the most nominations of all films this year. The record for most Academy Award nominations received is set at 14 by All About Eve and Titanic.

10 vs 14 nominations ain’t bad. I’m rooting for Slumdog Millionaire!

Other noteworthy Asian films include Thavisouk Phrasavath and Ellen Kuras’ “The Betrayal” for Best Documentary Feature, and Yojira Takita’s “Departures” for Best Foreign Langauge Film, Steven Okazaki’s “The Conscience of Nhem En” for Best Documentary Short.
