It’s the Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year) weekend! That means Seoul’s streets are empty! And it’s all because of this. Because it’s a major holiday, all the people in the city are going back to the country to visit their kins to celebrate one of the two biggest holidays in South Korea.
My daddy drove me to work today, and there were practically no cars today. He then remarked how it’s his favourite holiday because traffic is non-existent! He also joked that by tomorrow, you could take a nap in the middle of the street. My dad cracks me up.
But seriously, like other Asian countries, Seollal is a big deal here, so all these people leaving Seoul and other cities to go to various places on the peninsula is quite an adventure. A normal four-hour trip to the south turns into at least six hours. When the weather is crappy, at least double that amount. I’ll never forget that time my mum went near Gwangju, a city in Jeollanam-do, and it started snowing after she left in a car with relatives. Guess how long the usual four-hour trip took?
Seventeen hours. I kid you not. That’s an entire flight to the United States right there. Let’s just say I’m glad I wasn’t on that trip.
