This particular list makes me want to do the following: hurl, throw tomatoes, nod in agreement, reminisce down nostalgia lane, puke some more and give my middle finger. A friend agreed with my sentiments by asking, “Were the editors on crack?” Personally, I think they were. I mean, seriously, this list was so long. I think it would have been better to be more selective and picky and narrow the list down to like the top 50 or something. There were so many shows on here I never heard of or cared for, rendering me disgusted and apathetic about their choices. Some of their selections appalled me: why would they consider this show #n and whatnot?

On a more positive note, some selections made me happy because they were shows I personally enjoyed. Shows like Duck Tales, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Real Ghostbusters, and etc. These shows made me walk through memory lanes. However, IGN’s placement also made me question their sanity and made me wonder why they didn’t rank such great shows higher on their list.

Now, let me get away from being nostalgic and focus on the “Asian” aspect of this entry. I was
surprised by the number of animes on this list . . . fifteen to be exact — and not exactly ones I’d consider — but that’s besides the point.

Here’s the list of animes that are listed:

95) Fullmetal Alchemist
90) Afro Samurai
86) Astro Boy
78) Dragon Ball Z
76) Voltron
73) Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
70) Pokémon
51) Death Note
44) Gatchaman (Battle of the Planets)
38) Naruto
34) Robotech
29) Speed Racer (1967)
23) Transformers
14) Cowboy Bebop
10) Neon Genesis Evangelion

Do I agree with it? Well, no, I don’t. Am I glad that at least some animes made it onto the list? Yes, I am. But am I happy with their choices? A Big Fat No. I mean, sure I liked Gundam Wing, and Astro Boy deserve a spot on the list, but seriously, Neon Genesis Evangelion as 10? Just, no. I thought Death Note would be higher than its current ranking. On a side note, personally, I would have been happy to see like Tekuu no Escaflowne (Vision of Escaflowne) on this list, but considering how Fox butchered it, I’m not surprised. But that is yet another story.

All in all, this list was quite a disappointment, but at the same time it served its purpose, and it allowed me to cheer for my favourite shows on the list. What do you guys think of this compilation?

Was Evangelion that confusing?

Hell, the only thing that made sense on that list was Transformers, and even that went to far.

lol Yeah...if Japan were in on this list, they would totally dominate!

any kind of list that attaches a ranking is always highly subjective - what’s important is not the order but the inclusion of items that you may not have heard of… which isn’t really a problem with me, considering i regularly watched about 95 of the shows on that list, in addition to about 90% of the top 200 anime on animenfo.com.

quite simply, the amount of effort that goes into compiling such a list is enormous, but the result is ultimately limited by the authors’ personal experience with the media - which, i’m sorry to say, is completely limited to those offerings exclusively found in the USA.  understandable, but it’s quite presumptuous to label the list “top 100 animated TV series” and blatantly ignore what’s come out of Japan.  kind of like how the NBA champions are called the “world champions”, even though (until Beijing) team USA has continued to get wasted by european teams in world competition.  perhaps “top 100 animated series our landlocked american editors have watched on tv” would be a more appropriate title.

some eye-gouging omissions from the list:
- ichigo 100%
- girls bravo season 2
- ikkitousen dragon destiny
- buzzer beater
- higurashi no naku koro niperhaps “top 100 animated series our landlocked american editors have watched on tv” would be a more appropriate title.

I concur, it would be more fitting to change the title of the list.

XD I’m glad they didn’t put Sailor Moon on the list.  If they did, I’d seriously question IGN’s sanity.

I was kidding…

Sailor moon sucked! haha Even I know that. wink

They forgot Sailor Moon! lol

There’s a lot more Animes that should have made it.

hehe Just a tad.

This list definitely is iffy. Honestly… Evangelion as 10? UGH.
D :

I don’t know what’s up with Evangelion, but it was a mistake trying to find out.  I watched the last episode (which was a movie) at a friend’s house and I didn’t understand anything, there were demons(?) and random giant naked people and the Earth blew up and there were crucified bird dudes..robots..whatever the hell those were and everyone spontaneously turned to red lava..  and despite all that trippy crazy crap the boy and the girl with red hair are somehow still alive at the end.

The only anime I don’t regret seeing to this day is Berserk, and even the ending of that was beyond explanation.

It’s really annoying how you have to click next instead of them just listing it.

I agree. >_<;; It was a pain to click 100+ times to get through the entire list.

What’s your top animated series Tara?

That’s a tough question.  I never really bothered to compile a list . . . but TMNT, DuckTales, Ghostbusters, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Escaflowne, Madoking Granzort, Dodge Danpei, and etcetera are some to name.  Basically, any show that tugs my heart down nostalgia lane are on the list. ^^;;

TiffanieJLee - 02/02/09 7:11 pm

Macross belongs on that list—at least over Pokemon, c’mon—but I do agree with Neon Genesis Evangelion. After all this time, it is still an incredibly smart and well-written story.

My problem with Evangelion is the way they wrote and present the story.  I tried to get into the series, but the repitive Shinji feels sorry for himself, Shinji kick arse, everyone cheers for Shinji, and Shinji feels sorry for himself again just made me stop watching after the fifth or so episode. D:  Otherwise, I agree, the actual plot is interesting, but not the presentation.  Then again, the only thing I cared about from Eva was Kaworu-sama!!!

Yeah, you’re right.  Top 100 animated series from American Television Network sounds appropriate.  That’s what I figured was the main problem right there—they were all ones from the network.

Heh They usually are.

Yeah the list is iffy.

Voltron?! hahaa THAT’S SO OLD! I use to watch it as a kid. It’s probably the last cartoon I saw ever.

There’s a lot of good animes that no body knows about. Sadly.
