If you were watching Super Bowl commercials, you wouldn’t have noticed that the upcoming G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra movie features an Asian cast member playing a leading, main male character role. How could you have missed it? South Korea’s Byung Hun Lee is “Storm Shadow” but is masked throughout the trailer.
Byung Hun Lee as Storm Shadow is the real (hopefully, not masked the entire time) deal. It is one of few times in American cinematic history that an Asian male isn’t casted as a character who isn’t completely evil or sexless. Then again, it’s impossible to cast Byung Hun Lee as an unsexy lead. We made out once in 2007 when I was in Korea, and it was pretty damn sexy. While I’m sure I’ve single-handedly made every reader jealous, I want to make it clear that it was just a one time thing.
This movie is set 10 years into the future and is all about the origins of G.I. Joe. It’ll be in theaters Aug. 7 this year.
