February 18 marked the 6th year anniversary of the tragic subway fire in Daegu, Korea – my hometown.
For those of you who are clueless about the tragedy, the Daegu Subway Fire happened in 2003. An arsonist had set one of the trains on fire as it docked at Jungangno Station (downtown Daegu). The fire spread over the entire train, filling the station with smoke, leaving 147 injured and 198 killed.
Living in Daegu, I had visited Jungango many times (it’s a big shopping district). By then, the station had already been rebuilt and included emergency precautions like gas masks and a police officer at every station. You wouldn’t even know that something so devastating had happened by the looks of it.
Though this is a few days late, the entire Ningin family sends out their condolences to the victims of this tragedy. We hope that history never has to repeat itself.
Here’s a video about one of the survivors:
Thanks swtxcandi for the reminder. I’m glad some people still remember.
