Mia’s Take: ABDC 3 Episode 7

When watching the second-to-last episode of ABDC season 3, I became sad. We are one episode away from knowing who America will vote best, but can I really live with no more shows until season 4? I am going to be in ABDC withdrawal! How will I get my fix for Quest Crew and Beat Freaks?

Either of these spectacular teams is game, so right now voting is so important… We know from season one that when you don’t vote (*cough* Kabamodern *cough*) then your team might not have enough support. SO, VOTE! One crew secured a spot for next week’s finale: Beat Freaks As usual, this left the other two teams to compete for a spot: Quest Crew vs. Fly Khicks.

Beat Freaks: these lovely ladies represented the purity of choreography, plus made sure to turn out an entertaining performance. They must have known before hand that they were the safe crew because they were really relaxed—so loosened up that one of their dancers was a little messy in the middle. However, they did redeem themselves quickly with a reverse back kick during the “Poker Face” (by Lady Gaga) portion of their challenge. Their whole performance was just so enjoyable that I actually rewound it and watched it several times. Whatever happens, I am proud of this all-girl group that blew away the competition each week.

Quest Crew embraced unrestrained talent, which was made up of a no-holds-barred, incredible performance. They seemed to hypnotize the audience with constant engaging choreography. Their performance was so stellar that it forced their humor to wisely take a backseat. By letting each dancer control the lead during each of the five hip hop moves, they brought out each members’ strong point. In fact, Quest was flawless and made the Beat Freaks performance look boring. The boys began on the floor with a reverse move, fluidly went into tutting and then into waving. I will take away many things from this week’s performance… the energy they kept throughout the performance, their ever enlightening skills, how JC Chasez called Hok “King Tut” (with good reason), and Brian Hirano’s eight-pack. (Brian, thank you for that…& Call me)

Fly Khicks had a big start and finish, but otherwise, they just didn’t measure up. Threading through each other was really creative, but they went to their usual humping-the air booty shake moves. I was tired of seeing this again and again. Also, I thought them tutting with their shoes was a little childish. I will say that they did evolve over season three. It made me ponder why they kept going back to their mainstay of booty shaking when they didn’t have to. Either way, the girls go home with third place, and they should be very happy with that. The highlight of the Fly Khicks performance was when Mario Lopez asked aloud who would be the team to gain access to the finale; the live audience chanted “Quest Crew”

The Last Challenge featured Quest Crew and Beat Freaks dancing to their own mastermixes, which were collaborative efforts with producers. Beat Freaks also integrated original costumes and lyrics to their performance titled “Freak the Dream.” The girls are amazing role models, and they have inspired the next level of dancers to come. Whatever the outcome of next week’s show, they will always be the team that made MTV history.

Quest took member Ryan’s ability to play piano and added it to their original performance “OrQUESTra.” This crew again gave a impressive performance with tightly sealed dancing ability. Creatively, they danced atop a piano, with Ryan acting as a bass player while the other members simulated the bass while upside down. They also had Ryan play the piano while he danced. Dom’s spin on top of the piano and Quest Crew’s unison was really amazing. The audience gave them another standing ovation with good reason; this secondary performance didn’t have to be that great, but it was anyway
