Title: Winter Artist/Composer: BanYa Album: Interlock Blurbs: I’ve mentioned my sudden renewed love for Pump It Up!, the Korean DDR game. Well, this song was one of the songs used for the game. Arranged by Banya, the musical group who created a lot of songs for the game, they took Antonio Vivaldi’s “Le Quattro Stagioni - L’Inverno, 1st Movement (Allegro non Molto) and 2nd Movement (Largo)” aka “The Four Seasons - Winter” and combined the two songs to create one prestissimoso (very, very fast) tempo that makes even me go whoah. Listening to this makes my head spin, but I love it! It’s ironic, though, since I usually do not care for remixes. More »

What really defines 2PM from other dime-a-dozen idol groups is that while its members are clearly pretty boys, they also possess a slight grittiness that extends to their music itself. Both 2PM’s image and musical appeals are analogous to those of Justin Timberlake: while they officially fall under the category of boy bands and boy idols, their music has the ability to transcend beyond various genres. Most importantly, it’s the sort of music that isn’t only limited to one particular audience—from fan girls to top-forties fans to clubbers to music snobs to casual listeners, 2PM has got something for everyone to enjoy. This probably goes without saying, but JYP seriously knows what he’s doing. His first amuse-bouche, the Wonder Girls, has turned out to be a delicious five course meal, and now his new boy band protege, 2PM, is gunning for a hot new spot on the entree menu. 2PM encompasses not only vocal talent and sex appeal, but also a knack for both bboy acrobatics and aesthetics. In part one of Ningin’s Justin Chon interview, we learned about his father—a former South Korean actor—and got an idea of both of their approaches to tackling roles and acting in general. In part two, we will learn more about his new drama-packed film, as well as get a glimpse of this inspired film buff’s all-time favorites in the industry. More »

Apparently, some crazy bitch missed her flight in Hong Kong and started going berserk, like someone had killed her entire family. After a while, it’s kinda funny watching this demented ass shrieking with agony as she sees her plane leave the gate. Check out the video and promise not to laugh your ass off. Someone clearly needs a strong dose of Valium.
Since I flew back from Hong Kong two weeks ago, some of my friends had sent me this video and asked if I had traveled in drag. Bitches!

Only three episodes are left in this season’s Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew, and the question on everyone’s mind is which teams will end up in the final two. Tonight’s episode started with the final four raring to go in all inclusive collaborative number. The opening’s best part was when always-adorable Quest Crew took the floor next to forever fantastic Beat Freaks. Both teams interpret their skill so differently and yet each has their own sharpness that is a pleasure to watch. However, these two teams dominated the performance and the other crews didn’t shine; they seemed like they were there for backup. Thick anticipation rocked all the way through the opening performance; even the audience got involved. More »

This episode started off with a bang in final four tradition: an opening performance featuring all of the crews. The whole Boys vs. Girls challenge got hammed up to the extreme as the whole theme of the dance was, yes, boys and girls gettin’ down at the club. Nevertheless, it was fun to see the rival crews partnering up with one another, whilst getting the chance to showcase their individual talents. Flashy and smiley = good ol’ entertainment. More »

This weekend, it’s finally time for Kollaboration 9 in Los Angeles! Asian and Asian American artists will be competing in the largest talent show of its kind for prizes of up to $3,000 - not to mention massive bragging rights. But Kollaboration is actually two shows in one! There’s also going to be live performances from Jo Koy of Comedy Central, magician Norman Ng, and dance crews from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew: Kaba Modern (Season 1), Fanny Pak (Season 2) and Team Millennia (Season 3) (Check out Ningin’s special America’s Best Dance Crew site here.) We’ve already got a lot of good entries. There’s only about seven days left to enter! Remember, last chance to enter is midnight the 26th EST.
First, some clarifications: The grand prize winner, 1st runner up, and 2nd runner up, you’re not just getting one autographed Wonder Girl item, you’re getting at least three things autographed if you win. Also the grand prize winner can get more things autographed since they are meeting the Wonder Girls personally. So I’m saying, if you’re the grand prize winner, it’ll be krazy of you not to bring some Wonder Girl stuff for autographs. More »

During the taping of the Boys vs. Girls episode of ABDC, I got the chance to speak with the friendly and laid back Justin Chon. The 27-year-old actor recently received national attention for his performance as Eric Yorkie in Twilight and is currently on the heels of another success: the upcoming film Crossing Over, an intense drama that weaves together several vignettes about immigrants in Los Angeles. There are many things in life that I’ve given up on trying to understand. Like boys. English in Asian songs. Or UGG boots. This week, I’ve added one more item to the list: The Pussy Cat Dolls’ cover of A.R. Rahman’s “Jai Ho” song, notably famous for the ending dance scene in Slumdog Millionaire. What’s there to try to understand about it? I don’t understand why I like it so much — I’m not usually a PCD fan. More »

One thing I notice about South Korea — or at least in Seoul — is that it’s not handicap-friendly. Compared to ten years ago, I’d say South Korea came a long way in trying to be more friendly for disabled and handicapped citizens, but I still think they need a bit more work. More »

I know this was supposed to be announced earlier, but there’s a lot of stuff going on right now. Plus it took us some time to weed out duplicate entries and things like that. Anyway congrats to the following Ningin users: More »

If the greatest pleasure in life is to receive a love-love bento from a cute anime girl, then the second greatest pleasure must be to receive an anime bento from a real life girl. They’re not all anime-based, but New York resident and online gamer “annathered” has a unique talent - food art. Or maybe it’s “bento sculpture“. Well, whatever it is, it’s amazing, and what’s even cooler is her source material - anime such as Totoro and Moyashimon, games like Bioshock, Half Life 2, Zelda, Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, and other things like Wall-E and Calvin and Hobbes are among her collection. For the first time in ABDC history, the final four crews are comprised of two male and two female teams, which naturally lends episode 6 the perfect opportunity to feature another ABDC first: a boys versus girls theme. Was it an accident that Rihanna and Chris Brown ended up in this mix? It’s one thing to have all your ugly business splashed all over tabloids and the blogosphere, but it sure is peculiar, to say the least, for it to be insinuated at in a national dance contest. Of course, you can call it a coincidence, but the scandal is still coal-iron-hot in the media, and you’d think featuring both singers, especially in a battle of the sexes context, is rather poor in taste. Oh well, it is what it is. Anyhow, I hope this tides you over until the episode airs, which—in light of a train of mediocre episodes—is definitely something to look forward to! More »

BoA’s self-titled album will be out in less than a month but that doesn’t mean you can’t preview her latest track now.

On March 21 and 22, X Japan will be performing in Seoul for their world tour. The most expensive tickets (165,000 won = more or less $125) is already 99% sold, but I’m guessing it’s 100% sold out by now. The Korea Times reporter wrote how the tickets are selling fast despite South Korea’s gloomy economy. Well, now it’s my turn for being gloomy. I would have willingly shelled out the money for the good seats. Darn me for always hearing something too late. Then again, I could buy the cheaper tickets. If they haven’t sold out yet, that is. Knowing my luck, though, they will be sold out. More »
