Mia’s Take: ABDC 3 Season Finale

Quest Crew and Beat Freaks were in it to win, but there can be only one winner of Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew. All nine original competing crews came back to participate in tonight’s finale. Seeing these crews again reminded me that none of them made it easy for us, each crew in their own way represented the best. The audience was filled with anticipation on who the voter’s would give the title to. Which team would join the ranks of Jabbawockeez and Super Crew greatness?

These stylish and talented Judges took three teams out of the nine, to team them for performances. First up was Shane’s choices and what he called his “Intense Show”. He was right on the mark too. A master mix of Flo’Rida’s “Right Round” feat. Kesha was the background music for Strikers All Stars, Dynamic Edition, and finalist Quest Crew. At first, I was taken a back; I believed that their techniques would not blend well at all. In reality all the teams executed the choreography really well. There was no holding back and no over compensating for anything. Dynamic Edition’s clogging and Strikers All Stars stomping seemed to match almost perfectly and then the added bonus was Quest’s charisma and athleticism.

The 2nd performance was chosen by Judge JC Chasez. Beat Freaks, Box Cuttahz and Team Millenia got to dance to a master mix of “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga feat. Colby O Donis. This performance for me broke the dance floor. The two teams that were voted off instantly danced with a message that they would not be held back. The great part of this performance was that the men took a back set to the women and let the girls do their thing. I can only say this performance was lead by Beat Freaks they totally went for broke!

Lil’Mama took the final number and made sure to make it a reggaeton inspired set. A master mix of Kardinal Offishal’s “’Numba 1 (Tide is High)” feat. Keri Hilson played for GOP Dance, Ring Masters and Fly Khicks. The Latin inspired number was enjoyable and it was nice to see these very creative groups back for a performance.

The last performance of the two finalist teams, reminded me of old school breaking movies from the 80’s. Complete with New York City subway backdrop, b-boxes and track suits they celebrated the crew inspiring culture of ABDC.  Madcon’s song “Beggin” made for a perfect master mix and the two teams just mixed it up so well. In a way I felt like I was watching one giant crew. The performance was filled detail and also again had that Quest charm. You can see that the boys from Quest were always learning from the groups around them and they took the meticulous precision, usually belonging to the Beat Freaks, and learned to make it their own. Although Beat Freaks, avoided being in the bottom two all season they have to settle for 2nd place. However, these girls are professionals already and don’t need a title to know that they are in their own class of dancing. I really feel that Beat Freaks were so professional that they didn’t need the show, where as Quest truly evolved from a fun sloppy boy group to a dancing machine. I am really proud of them.

As I predicted last week the $100,000 grand prize and title of America’s Best Dance Crew goes to…. QUEST CREW!
