Okay she wasn’t really ever the Ambassador of Cute but they actually exist and are officially appointed by the Foreign Ministry of Japan.

They are actress Shizuka Fujioka, Yu Kimura, and Misako Aoki respectively. Apparently they were appointed to help Japan’s reputation and because they stand for all things cute. And why wouldn’t they be? You have your typical school girl, your harujuku babe and your lolita doll. What more could Jerry ask for?

Yeah! I guess she’s moved on to other things (like beer lololol)
I’ve seen cuter...they’re kinda like...disturbingly cute if you know what I mean lol

its funny how she is growing up (the whole beer thing) and barbie is too (the whole tattoo thing)…

Ahahah and the girls are “growing younger?” LOL

Another thought… “to help Japan’s reputation”.. what reputation? Of having uber-cute women who look like children, dressed in stereotypical fashion and on parade for dirty old men?  Oh wait…

“Cute” is a submissive, wholesome, innocent quality. Trying to reaffirm these attributes onto women seems to me to be a backlash of the rapidly changing social norm for Japanese women to be less like those qualities. Especially in markets abroad.  Gravure models would have been better if Japan wanted to convince the world that their women are strong, sexual, and dominant. Unless that’s the idea. “People are starting to think of our women as more than ‘little geisha housemaids’ and busty, ditsy, anime chicks, so let’s help our reputation get back to where we want it by appointing these stereotypes of male fetish as the symbols of our female population under the guise of ‘we’re trying to promote tasteful, wholesome qualities and traditional values’.”

Just sayin…
