Like Marty McFly in Back to the Future, I jumped back into what seemed like 1955 the second I moved to the back of a little well known tikki bar in downtown NYC called Otto’s Shrunken Head. Located on 14th St and in Alphabet City between Aves A & B, Otto’s Shruken Head is one of the few Tiki bars in the city and serves not only exotic drinks but even exotic acts, and how more exotic can you get than with some time travel. On the third Friday night of the month at exactly 10pm, the bar goes beyond 88mph and travels back to a simpler yet groovier time for ABC Rebel Night, where gents with jet streaked hair and dames in polka dot dresses dance the night away to spinning 45s. The night lasts until the cows come home or the police come a knocking, but with the grace and kindness these folk have, after each dance they do a courtesy bow to the partner, I think the police will come and join rather than bust up the gang. So next time you are in NYC on the third Friday night with nothing to do, why not head on down for a little trip that will surely make you wish you had some hairwax and a fine tooth comb.
