Bradley Rust Gray’s latest feature film THE EXPLODING GIRL has its North American premiere Thursday night in New York City as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. Credits include producers Karin Chien (THE MOTEL, W32nd) and So Yong Kim (IN BETWEEN DAYS, TREELESS MOUNTAIN), cinematographer Eric Lin, unit production manager David Hou (yours truly), key grip Douglas Seok, grip Kevin Lee, and production assistants Miranda Xu and Krista Carter. Not to mention special thanks to Mynette Louie from CHILDREN OF INVENTION and Ningin’s own Eddie Lebron of MEGAMAN fame.

THE EXPLODING GIRL stars Zoe Kazan, Mark Rendall and Maryann Urbano. It’s very much in the vein of the Japanese film CAFE LUMIERE directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien from Taiwan. THE EXPLODING GIRL world premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

Synopsis:
Cherubic college student Ivy (Zoe Kazan) is back home in Brooklyn for summer break with her longtime platonic guy pal Al (Mark Rendall) in tow. Ivy is a wholesome and balanced college kid who has epilepsy but keeps her condition at bay as long as she manages her emotions. As the hot New York summer melts on, Ivy plays phone tag with her boyfriend Greg, but when they do awkwardly connect, each long pause reveals their growing distance. Meanwhile, she spends more time with Al. As the lines of friendship begin to blur, we wonder how long Ivy (her name itself implying that something is growing) will be able to keep all that is boiling up inside from spilling over.

THE EXPLODING GIRL was a film made with sweat and tears by a cast and crew determined to make this movie a reality by overcoming many obstacles. No doubt, a lesser team would have given up. I congratulate them all.

I’ll be at tomorrow’s premiere. Say hello if you’re there too!
