Generally, if Perez loves it, I love it too. This time around, the Queen of All Media may have to be off with my head. While he’s showing nothing but love for 2ne1’s “Fire” mv and single, I’m kind of on the fence. I’m willing to take fault, though. Given the steam off their previous Lollipop single, the way they rock my favorite designer duds (see: 2ne1 promo poster with the Margiela shades and shoulder pads!), how I sort of admired Sandara Park’s stint at fame in my most beloved country, the Philippines — I was settin’ my expectations high.
So, what’s the problem Jinra? It’s too reggaeton for me. It sounds like the lovechild of every Pitbull song, ever. Having survived the ’00s, being a SoCal citizen with countless Hispanic friends my whole life, reggaeton is nothing new for me. In fact, reggaeton only conjures up images of huge shiny cadillacs rolling down the street at any given moment where I live. Which is only fitting because that is exactly what the music video is. The 2ne1 girls dancing in front of a caddy (?):
Now, don’t mistake me for sippin’ on a bottle of reggaeton Haterade. I just wanted something I’ve never heard before, something fresh. I still gotta give the girls props on their killer style.
