Kpop acts copying Western popstars? What! That happens? Gasp! I have never heard of such a thing, what sayest thou? Latest accusations to hit the blogosphere claim that 2ne1’s space version of the “Fire” MV bears some uncanny resemblances to international chart topper M.I.A.’s “Jimmy” MV. YG Entertainment hasn’t denied the accusations. Instead they sidestepped the issue to netizens by sensationalizing 2ne1’s collaboration with 1TYM’s Teddy for their first ever live TV performance, May 17.

Undoubtedly, I think M.I.A. is a far superior artist. At the same time, I see no occurrences of foul play. For starters, the song “Jimmy” contains samples from a Bollywood disco song from the 70s. As for M.I.A.’s original, money-making fashion style, I’m not surprised that the girls are heavily influenced. Imitating artists that are already making money isn’t exactly a new marketing trick. Czech out what all the fuss is about:

Now looking at both videos, they are really nonething alike so I don’t know why there is a big fuss about 2ne1’s video. They acquired stuff from other music videos too from today and the 90s. The only thing I can think about that may have inspired from the 80s is those flashing lights and their outfits.

ya, i see some 80’s-ness too~

2NE1 looks better though

MIA has better music ^_^

I totes agree!

yep. i listen to her music a lot~

Anyone have any idea how well 2ne1’s records are selling?

o.o

that is called copying?

They could easily say that MIA copied from the traditional style bollywood dancing which goes way back. Sure, there’s a resemblance between 2NE1’s Fire and MIA’s Jimmy but it doesn’t look too blatant - not like they copied costume for costume, dance for dance.

I would be more concerned for Younha’s 123 resemblance to Jackson 5’s ABC - now that is something that is quite noticeable since Jackson 5’s ABC is quite unique in its own right.

As for the arm dance thing - I don’t think MIA has the exclusive rights to that dance - it’s not uniquely hers, as stated above, its a bollywood thing.

poor them, but i think alot of ppl use that move though
it’s not really original is it?

2ne1 has been criticized a lot since they came out, but I think all this controversy is good for them.

welcome to the entertainment industry.

How much originality exists anymore in pop music nowadays? There will always be a bit of subtle copying..What works and looks good the first time around will get recycled over and over again

Yea, I agree with Choochi there’s a lot of pressure and hype on this group right now so people are looking at them with a microscope.

im really loveing the song now lol

Ah I feel really bad for them cause since the expectations for them are so high, people have so much to criticize them for. They’re really talented, just the huge expectations...stunted (?) their image a bit.

Honestly, that’s not really copying...it’s not like that sorta thing is copyrighted or whatever. I mean, there’s only so many ideas people can have, and they’re gonna get reused and whatnot. :[ Besides, imitation is the highest form of flattery ;]

I don’t know why artists get so mad when they get accused of copying. It’s not like their stuff isn’t going to get copied.
