Move over Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Adele. Allow me to introduce to you, Germany’s Jennifer Kae. At 20 years old, this girl’s got a huge voice that packs a whole lot of soul into a small frame. While she primarily sings in English, there isn’t much background on her that isn’t in German. Basically, she was born to Filipino immigrants in Germany, ended up on a German idol show and was contacted by Tokio Hotel’s producer to make an album. The result was a very pop, but soulful sounding Jennifer Kae. If you like a lot of 60s inspired pop music a la Amy Winehouse, Duffy or Adele, you’ll like Jennifer Kae. Check her Myspace for tour dates, especially if you live in Germany. Thanks to Forever 21, here’s a song that’s been in my head for days: More »

The other day I was talking about how Asian celebs are either cute or sexy and not much in between. Last time I showed you cute. Here’s sexy. Don’t know who Jo Yoon Hee is but, I like her sexiness!

Mika, oh, Mika… I know you said that you were tired of the whole NANA thing. You did some Big Band sound with “Black & Blue”. Tried the Japanese Gospel fad with “All Hands Together” and “Cry No More”. A little reggae with “My Sugar Cat”. Rocked out again with NANA2 and “Hitoiro” even tho you might not have wanted to. Got romantic with “Sunao na mama”. Got a little dancey up tempo with “Life”. Crooned your way into my heart with “Sakura -Hanagasumi-” Got a little off track with “I Don’t Know”. Won me back over with “Orion”. I know Mika’s got nothing left to prove. Girl can sing. But “Overload”? Somehow this week’s new single sounds a little old and recycled. More »

For Big Bang fans and fashionistas alike, this is big news. The Big Bang boys photographed by international fashion photographer Terry Richardson, will be gracing the cover of Arena Homme +’s spring/summer issue. As a menswear publication, Arena Homme + ain’t your gay best friend’s GQ. As a biannual publication (out twice a year), Big Bang was up against a lot of cover contenders. I can’t tell you to run out to the supermarket for this baby. If you’re looking to own this issue, go to Barnes & Noble and have at least $20 USD on you. More »

BIG MAN JAPAN (Dai-nipponjin) opens in limited release in LA and NY this weekend. The movie was a crowd favorite when it premiered last summer as part of the NY Asian Film Festival and Japan Cuts: Festival of New Japanese Film. Magnolia Pictures is giving BIG MAN JAPAN a slow American rollout starting with the Nuart Theatre in West Los Angeles and Cinema Village in New York City. Throughout May and June, BIG MAN JAPAN is supposed to roll out to other theaters across the US. More »

Not many exciting news today. Was giving the blogosphere more time to write something that catches my attention. Right off the bat, look at 2PM’s Jaebeom. He was featured in the magazine Nylon.

Da Mouth (dà zui ba / 大嘴巴) is officially a Taiwanese Mando-pop group, but it may just be THE United Nations music group of East Asian. It’s not just because they mix your classic Asian pop sounds with American hip hop and RnB touches. Just take a look at the backgrounds of its members: More »

When I get the 4pm sleepies here at work, I take a walk over to Dunkie-Doh’s for a little caffeine boost. But it looks like an office in South Korea shakes off the coffee break blues with a little Wonder Girls. Check out this guy waking up his co-workers with his own rendition of “Nobody”. The video quality isn’t HQ, so I can’t really be sure but does it look like all the co-workers are the same person too?! (O.o) More »

Seems that Asian girl band comes in two flavors, super cute or super sexy. Why is that? You don’t hear much about the ones in between (are there any?) that doesn’t really care about the look, only care about the music type artists. Oh well, no complaints here, just making an observation.

To promote their upcoming “Romeo” single, SHINee bagged some guerrilla marketing techniques and hit the streets of Seoul to hand roses to unsuspecting women in high-traffic areas. Romeo? Roses? Totally clever. While it is clever, my inner pop music cynic can’t help but think, “Maybe it’s bad and they’re using roses to guilt us all into buying the single. A date wouldn’t hurt if they want to buy my approval!” If that’s the case, I hope they hit up all the women my age and older. Women that have spending power. (But in this case, hitting me up wouldn’t be such a good idea.) Czech out the boys in action: More »

Dumb bitches like Miss California and Miss South Carolina should move aside and make way for the dumbest beauty contestant in town. Meet Giosue Cozzarelli - a contestant in the 2009 Miss Panama pageant. When asked about what the Confucius‘ quote “learning without thought is labor lost” mean, bitch gave the following answer:

Korean babe, check. Milky smooth skin, check. Leather check.Infinite amounts of muscular guards, check. Urban flavored techno, check. I guess sex(y) really does sell in Korea so goes the new theme for Michyeo. These new screen caps show heaps of skin, and could be banned in S.Korea later, no? (I kid) While you drool over the shots, be sure to check out these performance dates. More »

On the one end, Japan has a lot of weird stuff. Exhibit A, we have this marriage preparation bra. Seriously, wtf?! Exhibit B, after the jump, we have this near life-size pregnant doll.

That’s Right. After 2 months of inactivity, mas4 is back with a Lily Allen EP mashed with various Asian artists titled It’s Not Lily, It’s Masa. The artists included on this release are Namie Amuro, Koda Kumi & Tohoshinki (TVXQ), Utada, Ayumi Hamasaki, and JYONGRI. I highly recommend it and his other released albums, K-BOOTIE and J-BOOTIE. Check them out and download it from his blog: Masamixes More »

They’re coming to meet her. That is the Pussycat Dolls will arrive in Seoul this June 6th at the Olympic stadium to heat up the stage with the already spicy hot Son Dam Bi. How will their conversation be like? And will they perform a song together? I hope so. Stay tuned for additional details as the time draws nearer. More »

Kpop acts copying Western popstars? What! That happens? Gasp! I have never heard of such a thing, what sayest thou? Latest accusations to hit the blogosphere claim that 2ne1’s space version of the “Fire” MV bears some uncanny resemblances to international chart topper M.I.A.’s “Jimmy” MV. YG Entertainment hasn’t denied the accusations. Instead they sidestepped the issue to netizens by sensationalizing 2ne1’s collaboration with 1TYM’s Teddy for their first ever live TV performance, May 17. More »

I’m never seriously got into dramas. I have a weak addiction threshold so I was trying to keep my life addiction free. There were a few times when I couldn’t control myself and stuck the needle of kdrama into my veins. Winter Sonata was one of those moments of weakness. I don’t regret the depressing bliss this series caused me. But I thought it was over; a sinful past that I put behind me. Yet I can’t escape it, Winter Sonata is Japan’s favorite tv show. The reminders of that series are everywhere…

Sunye, of the beloved Wondergirls gets some new custom wheels. Its small, colorful and fun. I guess that describes Sunye too? I guess you could argue it’s not always easy fitting a car with a person necessarily. It seems there’s a company name on it, but for legal reasons I assume, it has been blurred? More »

OMG. Morning Musume drop their 39th single today with “Shōganai Yume Oibito” (しょうがない 夢追い人). Yes. Morning Musume single number 39. Scientific proof that if you take a bunch of super cute girls and have them sing super cute catchy songs, then people will eat it up forever and ever. How come America never figures out this pop-tastic formula? As is customary with Hello Project! singles, the MV will be released on DVD a week later. More »
