Yao Ming, aka the most famous Asian athlete in the world, might miss the entirety of the next NBA season. However, that’s not the worst case scenario. According to ESPN, the stress fracture in his foot could be career threatening. Never mind the impact this has on his team, the Houston Rockets, and never mind the impact this has on the parity of the always heated Western NBA conference, I’m wondering what this could possibly mean to Asian basketball in general. Asian drama fans, I have a confession to make. I have Asian Drama ADD. Meaning, the chances of me watching an actual primetime Asian TV show are super slim. I’m a scatter shot viewer — watch a few episodes here, watch a few there. 2005 was the last time I watched a drama in it’s entirety. I blame it on the recycled plotlines and characters and the lack of drug use and sleaze. More »

Aside from giving me gas, I can agree that dumplings are pretty good. Are they good enough to risk a bitch-fit from your older sister? Probably not. Unless you decide to cleverly steal them for the purpose of capturing your sister’s bitch fit on hidden camera. That is exactly what this person did: More »

I just got back from a nice vacation in the Bahamas. It’s something I highly recommend everyone should do. Just being able to disconnect from a computer and have no work and no worries. What a great feeling! Anyway, back to Asian stuff. Not much has changed in the past few days. SNSD and Wonder Girls are dominated headlines - SNSD in Asia and Wonder Girls in the US. The person that came up with the sailor outfits for SNSD should get a huge raise! I think people will buy their new album just for the photos alone, forget the music ^^

I almost missed this. One of the voices in the upcoming Ice Age movie is a 17 year-old girl from New Jersey named, Eunice Cho. She plays the voice of Diatryma Girl. Eunice will be joining a very star-studded cast of Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Ray Romano, and Sean William Scott just to name a few. Must have been a very cool experience for her! Between Up and Ice Age, it would seem voice acting is the way to get started for young Asian actors and actresses. More »

Generally it takes a lot of planning on post-its to come up with a college senior project. In the case of of Bang-yao Liu and his senior project at Savannah College of Art, a whopping 6,000 post-it notes were used…not to plan but to be featured as part of his pixelized stop motion short film. In addition to the 6,000 post-its used, the project took 3 months of planning and 4 days shooting to complete. More »

Every so often, Korean music companies like to debut new balladeers as obscure and anonymous. The logic seems to be that the element of surprise equates to a sizable amount of success. Perhaps the novelty is wearing thin, as it is no longer a big deal for a popstar to rise out of obscurity. More »

Despite some heavy controversy, The Girls Generation (SNSD) came back strong with Tell Me Your Wish (Genie). The Music Video was just released last night (6-25-09), and the very next evening they debuted BIG at KBS2 for their comeback special. More »

Apparently Hong Kong actress-singer Gillian Chung had tree trunk legs when growing up. She was often teased by her high school friends for that. Instead of squeezing these bitches to death with her thunder thighs, Gillian was determined to slim down her legs to prove these bitches wrong. By looking at her pictures now, it’s hard to imagine that she used to have tree trunk legs. One must assume that she did a lot of exercise to achieve this result, but that’s a wrong assumption. In a TV Patrol interview yesterday, Charice Pempengco revealed that she was formerly scheduled to perform alongside the late Michael Jackson in a duet/dance-off to “Billie Jean” for this year’s comeback tour. Like all of us, the King of Pop was first introduced to Charice via Youtube –last year’s Oprah performance in particular, followed by a Youtube video of her rendition of “Billie Jean.” More »

Vienna Teng played an intimate show at Housing Works Bookstore last Friday, and because it’s crazy Asian and Asian-American film festival time here in NYC, I couldn’t make it. So I sent Tina Chou instead. More »

The news is dominated today, deservedly so, by the death of Michael Jackson. It’s rare when an individual is known across the entire planet making his death a loss for all of humanity. The shock is still reverberating around the world, resonating with fond memories of all the things Jackson contributed to music. Here is a small collection of those memories put together by the Asian media blogosphere: More »

This is probably the hardest post I’ll ever have to make. Like many of you, I’m still having a hard time dealing with the tragic loss of Michael Jackson, King of Pop. There is nothing we can talk about in regards to music here that wasn’t impacted by his legacy. On his passing, Asian popstars had to say the following: More »
