As a life-long citizen of Orange County, I am no stranger to the ubiquity of the “sexy” Vietnamese coffee shop in Little Saigon. Last week, LA’s Fox 11 News decided to run a story on the Vietnamese coffee shop. Big deal, I earned gas money YEARS AGO at the boba joint a few doors down, I thought. And no, Vietnamese coffee shops are not deemed “sexy” just because of my close proximity. After all, I am but a lady in her pajamas, home on a Saturday night with no red wine, fireplace or bear skin rug in sight.
What makes a Vietnamese coffee shop a Vietnamese coffee shop (in addition to Vietnamese iced coffee), are the coffee shop ladies. In all honesty, I can’t describe the Vietnamese coffee shop lady without making the whole establishment sound like an underground prostitution ring. Typically, they have big boobs and they wear bikinis with the purpose of serving coffee and providing company to lonely customers. Or customers that just have a hard time finding bikini-clad baristas. While I can hardly consider this “news,” it’s news to me that the first song you can hear in the background of the *news clip is Far East Movement’s “Girls on the Dance Floor.” Perhaps a more fitting title for the song would’ve been, “Girls on the Vietnamese Coffee Shop Floor.” (Maybe it’s not too late for me to start a career in hip hop? I just realized I can slightly alter the lyrics of “Girls on the Dance Floor” to make “Girls on the Vietnamese Coffee Shop Floor” work!) Make us proud, Far East Movement. Make us proud!
