The day after an amazing performance, Tina Chou got a chance to sit in on the FAKE? Q&A session at AnimeNEXT. From Tina Chou: FAKE? was onstage and they are Ken Lloyd’s usual bandmates. He met them through friends of friends. Each member is in other bands making scheduling difficult — but they all made it to AnimeNEXT.
This is actually their second show together with all the members. Some of them can understand a little English but mostly Ken translated for them. Ken is in 2 bands (Oblivion Dust is the other) and he says that FAKE? is different because it’s more experimental. He wants to make people go “huh?” when they hear it while Oblivion Dust has more of an expected sound and style. I’ll just list some highlights from the audience questions since they are a pretty funny band.
These questions were directed at everyone. Different member answers are separated by periods.
What do you like the most about the band?
Being with Ken. Playing the drums the way I want. Free beer. Playing with great musicians. Coming to the US.
What is something people wouldn’t expect you to do?
Sports. Cosplaying. Fighting. People think I’m stupid but I like to read. Standing still on stage. (Last answer from Ken.)
What is the first thing you wanted to do when you arrived in the US?
Drink root beer which I really like. Smoke cigarettes. Drink beer. Watch porn. Play the show. Smoke.
If you have a pet what is it? If not, what pet would you get?
A dog. A dog. A little bird. I have a dog but I want a cat. An owl. I have a little dog which snores and burps like crazy. It’s horrible but sweet and I miss it already. It has a huge beard around its mouth and it’s the perfect dog for me. (Last answer from Ken)
Some of Ken’s own interesting answers:
Ken would cosplay as Naruto since he saw someone at the con with cool red arrows on his face and he wants to be like that. His favorite anime is Dragonball and his beanie hat is from Levi’s. He almost never shops (the others are shopaholics) but one day his jeans were all torn so he walked into Levi’s and bought the same hat in 3 colors. He’s worn the same necklace for probably 8 years.
He first got into music because of the Muppet Show. He grew up in the country and when he was 3-4 years old he had one record and would always play it. His next record a few years later had bad disco music on it but he still listened to it. Nowadays, he listens to anything and everything, such as weird underground stuff. But he couldn’t show you his iPod since it’s kind of embarrassing.
One of his most memorable moments with Oblivion Dust was when they were playing in a really small club one night. The guitarist used so much electricity that he blew out the club’s power and Ken had to use a megaphone to announce the songs while they played in the pitch black until the power came back. Another time, he was asked halfway through a show to request that the audience chill out. He doesn’t like asking people to do that and nobody listened. But apparently the crowd’s jumping was shaking the store below and things were falling off the shelves.
His most memorable moment with FAKE? happened yesterday. He is sharing a room with the guitarist (the bassist is named Morrissey FIRE (Takumi Mazda) was the bassist this time. Thanks to Bibiruru for pointing that out!) and he bought a bottle of shampoo to last for a couple of days. Yesterday he was showering and noticed that almost all of the shampoo was gone. It turns out that his roommate enjoys taking 90 minute bubble baths and was using the shampoo for bubbles. That’s how Ken learned what he was doing in the bathroom for such a long time…
After the Q&A session ended with a round of applause for FAKE?, I headed over to the C.R.A.Z.Y.O.T.A.K.U. event to see who would make it to the Pocky Olympics. – Tina.
