Chien-Ming Wang, the New York Yankees erstwhile ace, had a baby boy with his wife Chia-Ling today. The baby is a healthy 7 pounds, 12 ounces. They gave him the name Justin Jesse Wang. That’s a nice American name I suppose. So congrats to him!
Funny anecdote: when asked if he wanted his son to be a Major League pitcher just like daddy, he so no, the kid should be an agent. If you understand the sporting business, that’s just hilarious.
Having a baby in Asian culture (and every other culture) is a sign of good luck. Wang could definitely use some of that luck since he’s having one of the worst years in all of baseball history. So in Yankeeland, everyone hopes this baby will change how Wang pitches for the rest of the season since he’s so crucial to the championship aspirations of the team.
What really caught my attention were the comments from the blog post where I read this news. Most of them were of the congratulatory, good-tidings nature. Some of them asked if the baby, born New York, was a US citizen — to which one person replied, the baby is an American citizen but not an American.
My first thought was, “ohhh realllyyy!” My humor would have me insert many number of sarcastic comments here but it wouldn’t change the masses of ignorance and bigotry still in this country. Just to be clear, any baby born on US soil is an American citizen automatically. As far I being a true American, perhaps that will depend on daddy pitching a good game tomorrow versus ironically, the Washington Nationals.
