Archive for July, 2009

Seems like forever since I’ve done one of these. After getting a copy of FT Island’s new album (thanks Hoc!), I’m starting to fall in love with their voice. Yes this summer is being dominated by girl bands, but ladies, you need to check these guys out if you haven’t already!

19 days, 19 winners for our Ningin Summer Rewards. 2NE1 took a little lead over SNSD among the albums we’ve given away. We still haven’t decided if we’re going to continue this through August, but we’ll do something for sure. We’re also going to do a little surprise towards the end of the Summer Rewards promo. Check back next week when we’ll reveal that surprise! More »

These poor elephants in Thailand need a break, and tons of make up remover. Recently a female panda cub was born at the zoo in Chiang Mai and she has captured the attention of everyone in Thailand. The people who run the Thai Royal Elephant Kraal, an elephant camp in the Ayutthaya province, were not happy that this one- month old bitch was stealing the limelight of their elephants. So in an attempt to get the attention back and remind the Thai public that the elephants are the symbolic animal of the country, the geniuses painted their elephants like panda bears and put on a parade. From Girlybubble: I can already foresee this being a regular series. Our Asian fanatics readers would recognize these oh so pretty boys from the popular KPOP group SHINee. (For some reason I feel like watching Twilight right now.) I don’t know if it’s the hair, the pose, the face, or the fact that they’re all cuddling in bed together, but I’m very drawn to this photo. With all of that in the photo and their naturally light skin, my brain is interpreting them as angels. And maybe there are. Vogue really has the best photographers in the world. More »

Riots took place throughout Urumqi, China on Sunday, July 5 with devastating results.

On Friday, July 10 Chinese authorities announced the official death count as 184 and stated that more than 1,000 people were injured from the violence that shook the city on Sunday. Of the 184 who died, 137 were Han Chinese, 46 were Uighur, and one was part of the Hui Muslim minority group. More »

Good news for Twihards that happen to dig manga and graphic novels: This week a sketch from the Official Twilight graphic novel series leaked. Yen Press along with Stephenie Meyer have given artist Young Kim their blessings to create the Official Twilight graphic novel series. No word yet on a release date, but you can view more sketches in the July 17 issue of EW Magazine. Personally, I’d much rather have my Edward Cullen in celluloid form (or real life, whichever I can get), but he doesn’t look bad as a sketch: More »

…heavily. Contrary to popular speculation on a recent Popseoul blogpost, G-Dragon doesn’t have a hand in 2NE1’s styling. Sure they are great friends and they make music together and their avant garde-meets-hip-hop style bears uncanny resemblances, but…their style is the work of others. Praytell Jinra, who? And how do you know? Your not rich, famous and Korean! More »

From Girlybubble: Free stuff alert! Someone was kind enough to upload these adorable little Japanese Kokeshi doll vectors for people to use. Their kimonos are so cute aren’t they? Vectors are cooler than normal images because you can resize them indefinitely and it won’t look pixelated. If anyone uses these in a website or an artwork please let me know! You can download them from Vecteezy. More »

At the strong urging of Missy Kim, we’re going to have a G-Force movie pin game. Regular movie goers have probably seen the awesome trailer. Regular Girlybubble readers might have also read Missy Kim’s ecstatic endorsement of the movie. I didn’t learn until recently that there is an Asian connection - albeit small one - to warrant this pin game. That small connection is James Huang who plays Agent #2. Good enough for me! More »

From Ziggytek: Would you buy a phone that could alert you to swine flu outbreaks as it happens? The experiment brought to light by the Japan Times in early June 2009 is a new initiative being launched by the Japanese Government in conjunction with a phone carrier, possibly Softbank, this coming fall. BoA has been hanging tight with the urban American hip hop/dance scene, and I did it for Love with Sean Garrett has been a wonderful track. She has met with many U.S. hip hop stars, media, managers, and producers and is tied with Max Gousse. More »

If you’re concerned over the fate of the Pussy Cat Dolls amidst all the Nicole Scherzinger drama, Paradiso Girls, a new international girl group beckons your attention with,”Patron Tequila“. Personally, I’m more of a Don Julio kind of girl, but I’ll drink to girl groups representing the Philippines, France, Barbados, England and the U.S. Their debut single “Patron Tequila” featuring Eve and Lil’ Jon ( YEAHHHHH!!!!) is currently my all-purpose jam: More »

From Ziggytek: Ah Nintendo, you teaser. You gave us folks in the States, hope that one day your amazing, ninja looking all black Nintendo Wii would grace the store shelves all across the country. Now you’ve crushed that dream with one line from one of your reps to GameDaily. More »

The Shrink movie, starring Kevin Spacey and Mark Webber, comes out in limited release next Friday. Mei Melancon, and her seemingly perfect facial symmetry, will be playing the part of Miyu in Shrink. Some of you might remember her as Psylocke in the X-Men 3 movie. It’s kinda a stretch for a movie pin game, but we haven’t had one awhile. More »

From Girlybubble: Lately I’ve had such a craving for desserts. This always happens to me around the summer. But as you all probably know desserts can be a hassle to make. I definitely can’t stand being in a hot kitchen during the summer. So I spent last night looking for some easy to make desserts that are also light and pretty to look at. Pretty food just tastes better, everyone knows that!

Japan has amazingly cute desserts. Like anmitsu, or desserts made with agar jelly, ice cream and fruits. [Recipe]

Its not only the Wondergirls(50s) and 2ne1 (late 80s) who are fashioning themselves based off a flashback to the past. FT Island is taking on the 50’s grease image and they certainly don’t look too shabby pulling it off. Their style was designed for their latest single “Cross and Change” in which the band promised a progression from their previous image and music styles. More »
