The independent noir film, Blood Simple, will be remade by director Zhang Yimou with a Chinese twist.
Blood Simple is a 1985 crime noir film directed by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan. Blood Simple is a highly acclaimed film and has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 98%. The story is set in Texas where a bar manager’s wife is having an affair with one of his employees which leads to his plot to murder them. Instead of taking place at a bar in Texas, Yimou’s remake will revolve around a Chinese noodle shop in a desert.
To remake such a film has developed a few skeptics among the fans of Blood Simple. I, however, feel that the remake could be as good as the original. Zhang Yimou has quite a roster of films under his sleeves including Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Curse of the Golden Flower. He will surely add a new artistic touch to the film.
Sony Pictures Classics will distribute the film in various countries such as New Zealand, North America, Latin America, and Australia. The release date has yet to be announced.
