China has the largest population in the world with 1.3 billion people which is about 4 times as big as the United States’ population of 300 million people. About 1.2 million women in the U.S. have abortions yearly. Many people would think ‘wow that’s alot!’ Wait till they here the staggering number of abortions that China performs every year.

China performs about 13 million abortions a year. This number, however, could be higher according to China Daily newspaper. The abortions accounted for were only from hospitals but many unregistered clinics also perform abortions and who knows how many families try to perform their own operations. Also take note that approxiametly 10 million abortion pills are sold every year in China.

Since the 1970s, China has adapted several birth control laws including the one-child policy (one child per couple). The government strongly supports the use of contraception, sterilization and intrauterine devices for married women. However birth control policies overlook the increasing liberal views of young people who have casual sex and sex before marriage and tend to neglect the needs of unmarried women for contraceptions.

Approximately 62 percent of women who have abortions are single and between the ages of 20 and 29 years.

Decreasing the number of abortions will be a tough challenge to the world’s most populous country. The first step is to improve sex education and make it more readily available for people. Parents must also teach their child more about sex before they are overly exposed to it from the media.
