It seems Pokemon is not the only anime setting Guinness World Records. Yu-Gi-Oh! is recognized as being the best selling trading card game to date with over 22,587,728,173 cards sold as of April.
Konami Digital Entertainment made the announcement on Friday August 7 at the 7th annual Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game World Championship in Tokyo.

“We are amazed and humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response that Duelists from every corner of the world have had toward the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME,” commented Kazumi Kitaue, Chairman and CEO of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.

Yu-Gi-Oh! was created by Kazuki Takahashi as a manga in 1996 and spawned a huge franchise thereafter. The trading card game has been around since 1999 and has been spread to over 45 countries.

To me, it’s not that surprising that Yu-Gi-Oh! was able to set up such a record. I remember spending all of my allowance on Yu-Gi-Oh cards every week only to get repeats or cards that have absolutely no value. Of course that didn’t stop me from buying them. So I’m sure every other kid out there had the same problem as me and helped the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game to achieve the record.
