…is closer than we think. Many have predicted that in 2-3 generations the panda species could disappear. Approximately 1,590 pandas live in the wild throughout China and a total of 180 are bred in captivity.

The main problem is the reproduction of offspring. As the pandas’ habitat splits and becomes smaller, the chances of reproduction decreases. This gives them less chances to roam for mates, thus affecting their gene pool. Inbreeding within each habitat could reduce pandas’ resistance to diseases and lower its ability to reproduce. Highways pose major restrictions on pandas’ free movements, according to Fan Zhiyong, Beijing-based species programme director for World Wildlife Fund.

“We may have to give up building some infrastructure,” Fan said. “I don’t know the solution to this problem.”

Another problem is the low libidos pandas have. Breeders have resorted to showing them “panda porn” videos which shows other pandas mating and “sexercises” for males to train their pelvic and leg muscles for prolonged intercourse. It may sound weird but if it works, why not?

Pandas are pretty fussy. They only eat one type of bamboo which is rare. And they only mate once a year..
