I was able to watch the Asian-American comedy White on Rice and it did not disappoint.

White on Rice revolves around a 40 year old divorcee, Jimmy, who lives with his sister’s family and shares a bunk with his 10 year old nephew. Jimmy falls head-over-heels for his brother-in-law’s niece, Ramona, when she moves in with them. He believes that everything is going smooth between them until he finds out about her previous relationship with his best bud, Tim, who is also trying to win Ramona’s affections. And thus all chaos breaks loose as Jimmy tries to win Ramona’s heart through his hilarious shenanigans.

Directed by Dave Boyle and featuring Hiroshi Watanabe as Jimmy, White on Rice hits all the right places on your funny bone. The script is simple yet charming and I couldn’t help but laugh every time Jimmy was trying to hit on Ramona. The humor wasn’t overwhelming and leaves room for some heartwarming scenes. What really made the movie were the actors. I felt that each actor brought out his/her character’s personality very well. From the clueless Jimmy to his genius nephew Bob, I found every character to be likeable. Even the actors who did the side characters such as ‘banana girl’ Mary and Jimmy’s tall date Shiho did a great job.

Overall, I would recommend White on Rice to anyone who likes quirky comedies with a meaningful message.
