In 2001, Keiichi Iwasaki left his home in Japan to travel across 37 countries with only 160 yen (~$2) in his pocket.
This 36 year old man must have figured out that working in the air-conditioning business isn’t as exciting as it sounds. Bored with his job, Iwasaki decided to tour Japan for a year on his bicycle before moving onto South Korea and eventually 36 other countries. He has been traveling on his bike for eight years and his adventures don’t seem to end.
On his trip Iwasaki has encountered a rabid dog and pirates and even had trouble with local police in India. His mode of transportation has mainly been his bike but ocassionally used ferries when he needed to. He avoided air travel stating that traveling by bicycle helped him experience the atmosphere of the area he was exploring.
How did he survive on only $2 across 37 countries? Well, he didn’t. He may have left his home with only $2 but performed various tricks on his journey to raise money for himself. Still, it’s impressive how he has traveled 37 countries with barely any money to support himself.
Iwasaki has traveled over 45,000 km on his bicycle. He became the first Japanese man to climb Mount Everest from sea level without using any transportation and plans to climb Europe’s highest peak, Mount Blanc before moving on in his journey.
Iwasaki is currently in Switzerland and plans to travel to Africa and the United States in the next five years. He also plans to release a book about his adventures.
Best of luck to Mr. Iwasaki!
