Will it be that hard to determine the top 5 A-pop songs? Not a chance. Boys are made of lice and girls are made of sugar and spice. (Huh, who took over my writing?!) The girl bands seem to pop up as if there was some girl band spawning factory, manufacturing them at an enormous rate equivalent to the breeding of bunnies.

It just was not a good year in Korea for the guys, rock bands or solo artists. This time period was highly unusual for the Kpop scene. BoA is concentrating on her American debut and divided in half with Japan. Hyori’s activities ended very early in the year, and Ivy was out of the scene. Rain was busy acting like a Ninja, and Se7en who formerly shot for a debut in America had his plans canned. Son Dam Bi had a good run this year, so she’s quite an exception.

Due to the girl band stimulus package, this year showed change that the male audience became an equal ratio to females. FT Island was pretty much the only male group to hope for a place in the top 5, tied along with 4Minute and was placed instead to even out the odds. I liked this song because the group made a 180 degree change, going from melancholic drama music to happy upbeat summer songs.

So here you have my picks for the top 5 summer hits.

1. Girls Generation (SNSD) - Genie/Tell Me Your Wish

2. 2ne1 Fire

3. Brown Eyed Girls – Abracadabra

4. Son Dam Bi + Afterschool (AMOLED)

5. FT Island - I Hope

Tied with 5th place: 4Minute Hot issue
