Square Enix released a new trailer for their massive multiplayer online role playing game (mmorpg), Final Fantasy XIV, at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.
Some of you may be excited and some disappointed that the next installment to the Final Fantasy universe is a mmorpg (me being in the latter category) but it is no doubt that the graphics for XIV is stunning. It’s a great improvement from their previous mmorpg, Final Fantasy XI. Take note, however, that this trailer showcases very little of the actual gameplay footage. I assume the footage is mostly made up of the opening or cut scenes from the game.
I’m not too excited about FFXIV being a mmorpg for a couple of reasons: 1) mmorpgs are time consuming - the stories are never-ending so infinite amount of quests and events are introduced regularly and 2) I don’t have the money to buy the game and then pay a monthly fee to play it. As much as I love the Final Fantasy franchise I don’t think I’ll be picking this up. It’s all about time and money.
The game is scheduled to be released globally sometime in 2010 for the PC and Playstation 3. Veteran video game composer Nobuo Uematsu does the music with Hiromichi Tanaka (FFXI) as producer, Nobuaki Komoto (FFXI) as director, and Akihiko Yoshida (FFXII) as art director.
Will any of you be playing this game?
