In Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, if a woman dies in childbirth, her corpse must be treated specially: the mouth is filled with glass beads, a hen’s egg put under each armpit, and needles are placed in the palms of the hands.
And why is this done, you ask? To prevent the poor woman from becoming a Pontianak, a banana tree-dwelling vampire so vicious that pretty boy vampires like Edward Cullen (Twilight) and Eric Northman (True Blood) would flee in terror.
The Pontianak may take the form of a beautiful woman with very long hair and long black fingernails, or she may just be herself: a rotting undead corpse.
You can tell if a Pontianak is nearby if you suddenly smell Plumeria, followed by an awful stench. If you’re lucky, she may announce her presence with the cry of a newborn — but you won’t be able to tell if she’s near or far by the sound.
Although the thought of a woman living in banana trees and crying like a baby sounds laughable, you do not want to mess with this vampire. The Pontianak will kill you by ripping off your head and then drink your blood, or by clawing her way through your stomach with her sharp fingernails to eat your organs. Oh, and if you happen to be a dude, particularly one who wronged this woman in her human life? She might just rip your junk off with her bare hands.
Still think you’re brave? Here are a few locations in Singapore where Pontianaks have reportedly been sighted:
Show up at one of these places between the hours of 7:15PM and 7:15AM, alone or with a friend or two (some say Pontianaks will be drawn to a couple, others a group of three)- apparently Thursday night is the best night to do this. Keep calling her name and perhaps she’ll come. Or don’t, and perhaps she’ll come anyway.
Would you dare?
