The Pacific Media Expo experience, part 3

Now it’s time for me to cover the two events that I enjoyed the most: CosFest and PMX Fashion Show.

Saturday evening, the cosplay event CosFest took place and it was highly entertaining. It was a mini competition for various factors such as costume or performance with three judges at the panel. The host of the event (a cosplayer of Gin Ichimaru from Bleach) was entertaining and the show that followed was amusing. The skits and costumes ranged from comedy to jaw-dropping to down right strange and I loved it all. There was a half-time show (which allowed the judges to decide on the winners) with two musical acts. The first one was a performance by Mikarin and what a voice she has! I was pleasantly surprised at how good she was at singing. Her cosplay was also impressive. The second act was USA Musume which is a group that does cover songs from popular jpop group Morning Musume. I was yet again, pleasantly surprised at how entertaining these girls were. They chose some catchy tunes to perform and brought a happy and bright atmosphere with them. After their performance the judges came back with their results and gave away a few cash prizes and prize packs. Congrats to all the winners!

On Sunday was the PMX Fashion Show that showcased three very different styles of clothing. First off was the Lolita style clothing line Angelic Pretty. This line was filled with plenty of beautiful dresses with lots of frills and bows and tons of pink. All of the models looked very gorgeous in this girly style. Next up was Takuya Angel’s line of clothing. This brand is alot more colorful than Angelic Pretty’s and I would even call it eccentric. Though not my type of clothing, the designs were very interesting and has a unique style you probably can’t find here in the US. It was like a mix of traditional Japanese clothing and cosplay and you can’t really categorize it. The final brand was from Gashikon of Hangry & Angry. Unfortunately there were only two models so their showcase didn’t last too long. What a shame! I wanted to see more of this style. It’s the closest to what I would like to wear. The models did do a good job and I thought their cat impersonations were adorable. After a quick rerun of the outfits from all three brands, the show ended and left me a little envious for some of their clothing. Each brand did have some clothing available for purchase. Too bad I was broke by then.

Overall, my experience at PMX was great and it’s a good starter convention (it’s small compared to other conventions from what I heard). There were a few issues with time (the CosFest and Fashion Show started later than planned) but it was nothing too serious. If you missed this year’s convention, you can always go next year. It’s tons of fun!
