Rie Fu is a bilingual Japanese pop artist who experienced an increase in popularity after her song, Life is Like A Boat, was featured as an ending theme to the anime Bleach.
Her Life: Rie Fu (real name: Rie Funakoshi) was born in Tokyo, Japan on January 11, 1985. She and her family moved to Maryland when she was seven years old. Maryland is where she learned how to play the piano and was introduced to many of the artists that would influence her music style in the future (such as Sheryl Crow and The Capenters). In 1995, Rie Fu her family moved back to Japan where she finished primary and secondary school. In 2002, Rie Fu learned how to play the guitar and soon afterwards, started to write songs and record them on a tape recorder. She made a few demo tapes that would eventually lead to her contract with Sony Music Entertainment. In 2003, she was admitted to the University of Arts London studying fashion design, graphic design and fine art painting. Although she graduated from the university in 2007 in fine art, Rie Fu has stated that she would like to be a student again.

The Music: Rie Fu made her musical debut on March 24, 2004 with the single Rie Who?! which peaked at #53 on the Oricon charts. Six months after her debut, Rie released her second single Life is Like A Boat. This song was the first ending theme to the anime Bleach and because of that, it increased her popularity as evidenced by the 32nd position it had on the Oricon charts. Her first self titled album was released four months later and peaked at #12. For the past five years, Rie has sang many songs for anime and movies and even did a collaboration with m-flo on their Beat Space Nine album. She releases songs both in Japanese and English. Very few of her songs are entirely in Japanese. Her music is more on the light side and is the kind you would listen to when you need to calm down or have a relaxing day. Her songs are simple yet meaningful (as are her music videos). To date, Rie Fu has released 12 singles and 5 albums (one of them being a European release).
Interesting Facts:
-Rie Fu usually designs her own album and single booklets which sometimes features her own paintings
-Rie Fu has had a few art exhibitions showcasing her artisitic talent (which can be seen here)
-Rie Fu likes to stare at the moon whenever she feels nervous or lonely
Here are a few songs that I personally liked and I urge you all to give her a try! She is very talented and underrated.
