Nana by Ai Yazwa is chock-filled with rock music, love triangles, hot guys, scandals and comedy: A deliciously perfect recipe for drama.

The story starts out with two chapters introducing the two female leads (both named Nana) and their ultimate decision to move to Tokyo. Nana Komatsu wants to live with her boyfriend who is studying in Tokyo and Nana Osaki wants to start a career in music. On their way to Tokyo, the two meet and become friends. Little did they know what Tokyo life had in store for them…

Although the story does not revolve around dating or romance, there’s plenty of love and hate being spread around between friends, lovers and bandmates. Let’s take the two Nanas for example. Nana Komatsu loves men. She falls in love pretty easily and gets involved in a few love triangles. Nana Osaki was in a serious relationship with a soon-to-be-rockstar and now has to deal with the pain of seeing his face plastered on billboards and music stores. Of course I’m just simplifying their problems; it’s a lot more complicated than it seems.

Nana is one of my favorite shojo mangas with plenty of drama and character development. The art style is also unique and I like the fashion styles Yazawa puts onto her characters. Unfortunately the manga is on hiatus in Japan so it will be awhile before we see any development in the story.

If you’re not into anime or manga there are two movies available that revolve around the first part of the manga. They’re enjoyable movies, and I recommend you watch them.
