Wendy’s has never had that much of a stronghold in Japan (those would be KFC and McD), but it was always fun finding one of the 71 locations scattered around Japan. Enjoying the big fries. Familiar foods. Frosties. Pure pleasure.

Sadly Wendy’s is now shutting down those 71 locations and leaving Japan completely. Things, it seems, are bad for Western fast food in Japan. Even McDonald’s is suffering. The reasons are complicated. Backlash against Western fast food is just one example of a growing backlash against everything Western among certain segments of the Japanese population. This combined with a growing movement to return to a more ‘traditional’ Japanese diet have put a strain on fast food.

But don’t be sad, there will still be those 16 Burger King locations in Japan. If you can ever find them.
