2009 had some fierce competition as far as music goes in the state of Pop music, especially Korea. However, the Asians took their battle internationally, as US and Japan had some excellent music videos.
It was difficult to decide, as videos in Asia recently have been lowering their budgets for music video production so I had to put that into account. Still, I had to choose videos that had some sort of visual impact. In many cases, good direction as in the first music video makes up for lower budget.
G-Dragon - Heartbreaker (KOREA)
This video pulls out all the stops. The composition of the objects in the background, and the way they work against the colors is brilliant. I love how the video set is completely fantasy and takes you out of the real world and into some other place you haven’t been before. The set in this video is fantastic. The apple core thing makes you think, “What the heck are you doing, G-Dragon?” That alone pulls you into this beautiful array of visual elements.
BoA - Energetic (USA)
The video for this gets some major dancing props from me. Break dancing combined with choreographed dancing is beyond excellent here. A lot of visual impact is in its direction of what they’re doing. It also had some great lighting, especially the green lasers. As one could tell you, its not an expensive video. But what they’re doing in the video easily makes you forget that its low budget. Oh it doesn’t hurt that BoA has just the most doey eyes here.. aww<3 Um what, was I blogging? Oh sorry.
Brown Eyed Girls - Sign (KOREA)
It was tough to decide between this and Abracadabra, because that song was so catchy, and of course the provocative feel of it all. I really liked the angelic theme and cinematic quality of this SIGN MV, it’s very thrilling. If there’s any video that can grab your attention, it’s this one. Going the extreme route, Brown Eyed Girls really gives up something talk about. Breaking out of the glass underwater I thought was cool but once again, netizens can’t decipher the difference between fiction and reality so thus, they complained about it. Hey, more publicity I guess, right?
Girl Next Door 偶然の確率 (JAPAN)
I really like everything going from a beautiful grand theatre to the outdoor racing scene. The video least appears to have the biggest budget out of my five. Sure the whole thing seems very anime sound track-ish but that’s the appeal. Speaking of anime, she has this blaster and fighting a scorpion. Cheesy? Oh well, overall its a cool video to watch.
Girls’ Generation -Gee (KOREA)
The SM team just keeps on finding the best girl pop concepts on the planet. If one thought all themes were already taken, we had to think again. How come other pop groups did not use the mannequin theme before? (Or did they?) You could of thought of that, right? Since the girls look much like dolls, with their perfect skin and bodies, the girls and their acting in this video was quite a sensation to watch.
Son Dam Bi - On a Saturday Night (KOREA)
Such beautiful colors. Such a beautiful girl. Just observe the screen cap. The whole disco theme has been transformed into the current age. The arrangement of costume, set and colors is an art within itself. It helps that the song was one of the catchiest tracks of 2 double 0h 9!
FT Island - I Hope (KOREA)
Ah a survivor from the summer. This group was the only male group to survive the onslaught of girl groups during that time. What was the secret? A COOL music video! The story was pretty interesting how they ended up in a totally different world and became another band image.
Brown Eyed Girls - Abracadabra (KOREA)
The girls get yet another one on me. Why? I don’t know, its something about a few “risque” scenes in the MV that caught my attention. See for yourself!
TVXQ - Why did I fall in love with you (Japan)
This is one classy looking video. From a simple night to a very dreamy Gothic building, the smooth dream effect is applied to this video generously, but not over done. Good shots and transitions overall.
Namie Amuro 安室奈美恵 WILD (JAPAN)
It’s Namie Amuro. She’s in leather. She’s on the moon for Christ’s sake. Do I need mention more?
Note: Video may disappear due to Avex policing video uploads to Youtube.
That about wraps it up for 2009, the last year of the single digit years! The fact is that there were a lot of decent videos out there and I had trouble ranking them, as so there’s no official numerical order in these. What will the teen years bring us?

TOP 10 Ningin Stories of 2009; is also the most memorable!
Good stuff.
I watched the anime and read the manga. Didn’t like Greed Island and the anime stopped in the middle of it when I stopped watching.

^ Yeah, my bad on Cowboy Bepop. Have you ever read/seen Hunter X Hunter, Myles?
What about Death Note, Hajime no Ippo, Code Geass, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Monster, Azumanga Daioh, Hunter X Hunter, and so forth?
I only read the manga for Ippo, Death note and Monster. Didn’t like Code Geass or Azumanga Daioh anime, the manga for Azumanga was much better. And Cowboy Bebop was last decade besides the movie so I wanted to include other stuff. FMA, Ippo and Monster would probably belong to the list though.

1. TVXQ (Xiah Junsu, Micky Yoochun, and Jaejoong) and Super Junior (Hankyung) trying to opt out of their contract: SM needs to get it together and catch up with the times.
2. Jaebum Leaves Korea-2PM: I was sad when I heard this.
3. Lee Byung Hun Sleeps with a Girl: Just treat the woman right-do her justice.
4. UEE Nude Issue: Netizens did something good for once.
5. G-Dragon faces plagiarism and sexual content in concert: Again, Korea needs to keep up with the times and G-Dragon, check your work next time please.

hmm. top pop acts of the decade? I agree with most of yours (although I have never heard of Tata Young and Lee Hom Wang). I think DBSK/Tohoshinki deserver a place on the list. I am not a fan of them, but you can’t deny the mega-popularity that group has received in all of Asia. for me, Utada is my number 1 ( First Love is amazing!!! plus, she was also my first bit of asian music).
here is my top 10 list: Utada, BoA, Ayumi Hamasaki, Rain, Namie Amuro, DBSK/Tohoshinki, Wonder Girls, Kumi Koda, arashi, se7en

Yep I agree on Charice too, Although a bit new she definitely is star material!
EoTY: Top Asian Pop Acts of the Decade:
I’m glad you mentioned Charice. Unlike other artists, Charice gained not only in one or two countries but worldwide recognition with a completely unknown background. Props to her.
