Oh boy were there many! 2009, is by far the worst year for kpop. So many things happened whether they were big or not. In America, scandals can be seen as a popularity increase, and a pretty much carefree issue, but in Korea, it’s something you try to avoid.

1. The biggest scandal of the year is probably TVXQ (Xiah Junsu, Micky Yoochun, and Jaejoong) and Super Junior (Hankyung) trying to opt out of their contract. TVXQ has already sued SM Entertainment, and it looks like SM is having some difficult times with their best groups extremely close to break apart.

2. Jaebum Leaves Korea.
2PM, now a 6 member boy group, was lead by Jaebum. Through Jaebum, and their individual talents, they maintained a “beastly” idol image, and became one of the best groups of the year. Their popularity was beyond normal rookie groups, but Jaebum left because of his condescending Myspace comments about Korea.

3. Lee Byung Hun Sleeps with a Girl.
Now this doesn’t sound too bad, but after he brought her too bed, he has been ignoring her. The girl, thinking he would take care of her, feels she has been betrayed and used. Although this is an issue still going on, it seems like the girl has clear evidence that she knew Lee Byung Hun and was actually close to him. Seems like this perfect man is not so perfect.

4. UEE Nude Issue
Some netizen cropped out UEE’s face, and put it on the body of a nude woman. The pictures looked realistic and it shocked everyone. Luckily, some fans were able to find the picture where the original face was in, and they realized that the nude picture was all just the work of photoshop and some man who apparently has no life.

5. G-Dragon faces plagiarism and sexual content in concert.
Despite his song, Heartbreaker, sounding similar to Flo-Rida’s Right Round, G-Dragon won many awards for his song. It’s catchy and great, but Sony doesn’t think so. G-Dragon faced plagiarism accusations and was looked down upon for those accusations. In addition, G-Dragon also had a solo concert. Since he is G-Dragon, he decided to make the concert more Americanized when it comes to performances, meaning he tried to make it more sexy and sexual. He had a bed scene with a girl, and because of this, he has been accused for violating child protection law, and sexual content. I think G-Dragon needs to take it slow when performing in Korea. Don’t you think?

I watched the anime and read the manga. Didn’t like Greed Island and the anime stopped in the middle of it when I stopped watching.

What about Death Note, Hajime no Ippo, Code Geass, Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Monster, Azumanga Daioh, Hunter X Hunter, and so forth?

I only read the manga for Ippo, Death note and Monster. Didn’t like Code Geass or Azumanga Daioh anime, the manga for Azumanga was much better. And Cowboy Bebop was last decade besides the movie so I wanted to include other stuff. FMA, Ippo and Monster would probably belong to the list though.

4. UEE Nude Issue: Netizens did something good for once.

5. G-Dragon faces plagiarism and sexual content in concert: Again, Korea needs to keep up with the times and G-Dragon, check your work next time please.

Hm...I’ve only heard and or watched some of these titles.

So many things happened this year in Kpop. It had it’s ups and downs, but it was still an amazing year. I can’t wait for 2010!


hmm. top pop acts of the decade? I agree with most of yours (although I have never heard of Tata Young and Lee Hom Wang). I think DBSK/Tohoshinki deserver a place on the list. I am not a fan of them, but you can’t deny the mega-popularity that group has received in all of Asia. for me, Utada is my number 1 ( First Love is amazing!!! plus, she was also my first bit of asian music).
