Oh! What a week we’ve had here. Oh! I don’t even know where to begin. Oh! Wait, now I remember. We turned Japanese this week with Rekuru and our Japanese Film Royale special. The general consensus this week is that we’re all pretty much in love with Japanese film. Speaking of love –you’ll soon be falling in love with us next month. Be patient, it’ll be good on many levels. More »

This week’s pin challenge should you choose to accept: Luna! If you can remember from the previous Mixr bloggers vs. Mixr users one-day MLG match, Luna is a game in which the objective is to pass colored balls into matching portals. Since I’m such a big Sailor Moon fan, you better believe the challenge is fierce. More »

In war, it’s often the victors that gets to write the narrative. Since I was captain of the Mixr Users team, history is how I see it. What I saw was…total domination by Mixr Users!! From the beginning, it never seemed like Mixr Bloggers had much of a chance, but people expected a much closer battle instead of the 7-2 final outcome. One of those points on the Mixr Blogger team, by the way, came from a Mixr User not playing. Let’s get to the breakdowns: More »

Japanese game shows are some of the craziest and dumbest in the world, but they are the most hilarious. In this particular clip, people have to run on a treadmill and jump over hurdles to avoid being thrown into a pit of flour. Sound easy? Not really, but that’s the whole point of the game. So sit back and laugh your booty off! More »

Ninginers, your prayers to Saint John of Las Vegas have been answered…in the form of pin game results. Many of you prayed that this movie would do well but unfortunately, it was yet again another movie that did not. So much so, that Rottentomatoes offers no general consensus. Typically smaller films don’t allow movie critics to watch it prior to its release if they know it’s not going to get sparkling reviews. More »

This past week’s Click the Bombs pin challenge was, for lack of a better phrase, the-bomb-dot-com! In this challenge, you had to score 30+ points for a Keanu Reeves pin. Those who beat Hoc’s score received a lovely Sandra Bullock pin. More »

From Rekuru:

I’m really grateful to have had the chance to see Kurosawa’s last film, Dreams (1990), at the New York Film Forum. Not only is it an incredible film–certainly one of his best–but it provides, if in a problematic form, a sort of answer to the two questions Kurosawa claims to have struggled with all his life: Why can’t people be happier? and Why can’t they be happier together? BoA’s performance of Possibility was a little awkward due to microphone (or earpiece) error. A second in a row for S.M. entertainment’s artists. Just the other day, Girls’ Generation had a technical error. More »

Following The Host, Bong Joon Ho’s “Mother” is his latest film to make its way into US theaters. Scheduled to release March 12, Mother stars Won Bin who plays a mentally handicapped individual charged with the murder of a young girl. The case closes finding him guilty but as the film’s title suggests, mother dearest is anything but happy. As in, you don’t wanna mess with mommy. You also don’t want to mess with Bong Joon Ho, a critically acclaimed director and screenwriter. If The Host is any indication of how Mother will do stateside, I’d say it’d fair pretty well. When it comes to how I felt about The Host — color me impressed. Watch the trailer for Mother below: More »

From Rekuru:

This is an unscheduled post, but as of when I’m writing, America just lost a great hero. J.D. Salinger, author of The Catcher in The Rye, understood perhaps better than anyone what’s it like to be a teenager; and helped every generation since cope with its angst with the wit, charm and sympathy of his writing. I read Catcher in one day, and for a long time it was my favorite book; many can say the same, but personally, it also made me really want a kid sister. Years later I went to Japan and found I wasn’t the only one. So without further ado: the top five anime kid sisters of all time. More »

Bobby Lee is the best cast member on Mad TV. His is just so freaking funny. I don’t even know how he does it. He is just simply amazing, and I would definitely marry him. I’m seriously pulling for him to get his own TV show because I would totally watch it. Anyway, so as I realize that he is the best comedy sketch actor when I was watching a rerun, I thought back to all of my favorite things he has ever done. I compiled my own list of the best of Bobby Lee. More »

If a feel good story about beating the odds really fits your fancy, Swing Girls could be for you.

Say what you will about Japanese pop culture, but you have to admit that Japan has a long history of producing very talented artisans and craftsmen. Now what I enjoy is when someone combines (the rather soul sucking) modern pop culture with traditional artwork, producing something insane. Like what you’d get if you painted all 150 Pokemon in a more traditional style. More »

To be truthful, I had never heard of Polysics before until I read somewhere that one of their members was leaving although right now I can’t remember who. I don’t really know a whole lot about this Japanese group except that they are techno-y. Although this song “Catch on Everywhere” has these weird chipmunk voices, I really like this song. It might have to do with this song being super catchy!!! I also kind of think the voices are cute!!! More »

From Wirebot:

Maybe you’re interested in how games are developed. Maybe you just like listening to Nintendo Executives interview one another and make references to American TV Shows. Perhaps you’re a Legend of Zelda fan, interested in how your little piece of gaming nostalgia was created. Either way, you might be at least a little interested in the latest Iwata Asks, where Nintendo President Satoru Iwata chats to Toshihiko Nakago, Takashi Tozuka and Eiji Aonuma about Link’s Awakening, the first hand-held Zelda game for the Nintendo Game Boy. Besides my ongoing series on the impending “Robot Rebellion,” I’ve also been taking time to point out the brewing “Giant Robot Statue Cold War” that’s going on in Asia right now. Before it was just Japan and Korea, but it seems Taiwan has just entered the race. More »

MR. BRAIN was a highly successful Japanese drama that aired this summer. In a nutshell, Tsukumo Ryusuke, SMAP’s Kimura Takuya, used to be a host until a siding of a building fell on him, and miraculously turned him super smart. I think it had to do with what the doctors had to do in order to save him. Anyway, he goes to America to earn all of these degrees and comes back to Japan to join National Research Institute of Police Science as the head neurologist. More »
