Autumn’s Concerto is one of my favorite dramas of all time. Who would have known it would be this good? The story sounds typical- Playboy meets poor nice girl; He changes his ways; They fall in love; Boy loses memory; Girl is forced to leave; They meet again years later- it doesn’t sound too original. However, with the right director and talented actors/actresses, the story could turn into a more emotionally involved plot with riveting characters. Let’s take a look at the talents behind the characters shall we? May contain spoilers if you haven’t hit the 6 years later part of the series.
Vanness Wu as playboy-turned-lawyer Ren Guang Xi
Being an ex-member of famous boy band F4 and collaborated with ex-H.O.T.-member Kangta, Vanness has established himself as a successful singer/rapper. He’s done dramas before but I think Autumn’s Concerto displays his true talent for acting. He has to go through so many emotions because of the changes his character undergoes. From arrogant playboy to distressed fatherless boy to loving boyfriend to hot shot lawyer- there seems to be no bounds with his acting potential. I hope to see more of Vanness in the future.
Ady An as sweet-girl-turned-single-mother Liang Mu Cheng
Ady An does a great job playing Mu Cheng. Her character is strong, independent, and reliable- perfect traits for a heroine. I also like how Mu Cheng isn’t so fragile and when things get rough she doesn’t go to a corner and cry but instead faces the problem head on (except for when she leaves Guang Xi- that was a complicated situation). I loved the part when Guang Xi revealed his bet to steal a kiss from Mu Cheng only for her to counter it with a false bet instead of crying over the betrayal. You go girl!
Chris Wu as the man-who-will-never-be-a-love-interest-to-the-one-he-loves-and-will-always-be-JUST-A-FRIEND Hua Tuo Ye (Poor guy!)
Chris Wu does a great job as the love-stricken Hua Tuo Ye. His character is like a big brother to Mu Cheng though he wants it to be more than that. Chris’ image totally fits the sweet overly protective brother role. He looks innocent enough but if you get on his bad side, Chris can look like absolutely scary. And by scary, I mean that he can kick your butt across the globe kind of scary.
Tiffany Xu as the sweet-love-rival-who-you-can’t-help-but-loathe-for-being-with-Ren Guang Xi He Yi Qian
Maybe loathe is too strong of a word to describe how I feel towards Tiffany’s character. She’s just so nice. That’s not a bad thing of course but what makes it “intolerable” is the fact that she’s engaged to Ren Guang Xi in the six-years-later arc. He’s Mu Cheng’s man (even if they’re not together at the moment)! What makes it worse is that she genuinely loves him and isn’t using him for any kind of ploy. How can Ren Guang Xi and Mu Cheng be together without hurting He Yi Quan? I want her to have a happy ending too. If only certain people had told her the whole truth about Guang Xi and Mu Cheng’s relationship…
Xiao Xiao Bin as the adowably-cute-boy-looking-for-his-alien-dad Liang Xiao Le
Here’s an actor whom I believe doesn’t have a single anti-fan, Xiao Xiao Bin! He seems to get along with the all of the characters in AC. He was even able to break through the icy coldness of his grandmother. But honestly, who could resist? Xiao Xiao Bin’s acting is convincing and made some people shed a tear quite a few times. In my opinion, Xiao Le seems to be the most sane character in the series to far. Probably because he hasn’t experienced much drama in his life yet (except for not having a father). I can’t wait to see Xiao Xiao Bin grow up and hopefully he’ll pursue an acting career.
It’s hard for me choose a favorite character. They all have their ups and downs. What makes them memorable characters is that they’re realistic. So far the story doesn’t play out like a fairy tale and you wonder if all will be well in the world of Autumn’s Concerto.
