A big surprise from the Sony and Panasonic team. Each of the two 25GB layers has been refined to 33.4GB per layer. They have been working a refinement for a while now, as the weakest chain in their technology is NOT their lasers. Why fix the body when you can fix the brain? How does this work, without buying any additional parts? A firmware update (FREE DOWNLOAD) to your blu-ray player or PS3 will tell your lasers to read more precisely and pack data more closely within the same space efficiently. (Improving error check.)
What will this mean to Blu-Ray in films, data and games? Well before any of you fanboys on either side get disgruntled, additional space is always optional. For film, that means we can allow the extras to no longer be shown in compressed sizes, or smaller resolutions (provided it was filmed in HD) It also means we can solve the problem for some TV series, as they are surely compressed. For example if the Blu-Ray fitted in high quality 22 episodes but the show was 24, there’s a problem here. The extra 8 GB per layer would help wonders.
For Games: As we know, PS3 games like Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII have pushed the size way beyond DVD and filled up the whole Blu-Ray. The extra space in the disc would allow more games to be playable at 1080p as per 720p.
About why Xbox and why some PS3 games look the same:
Only Multiconsole games leave the Blu-ray empty because they need to fit on a dvd for 360. To me that’s bad for 360. Because 360 is on DVD ,games have a limit. GTA 4 could have been bigger and better, MW2 could have been bigger and better. Sony is able to make games like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War 3 because IT DOES HAVE BLU RAY!!!-Demiwarrior

Great update for a new year!
I’m so glad that Blu-Ray won out over HD-DVD. If I’m not mistaken, dual-layer HD-DVD maxed out at around 30Gb (which is now lower than single-layer Blu-Ray!). Also, “HD-DVD” is five syllables long, whereas “Blu-Ray” sounds awesome and is easy to say.
Blu-Ray discs need to stop using VC-1 as its codec because it is terribly inefficient. H.264 is capable of the same image quality at much lower bit-rates, meaning far smaller file sizes. With dual-layer Blu-Ray and H.264 as the main codec, producers should finally be able to cram all special features, extras, and main movies onto a single disc.
