2008 had autotune up the American pie holes with T-Pain, and come 2009 it was forced up the yin yang for all Kpop. Yes, I’m looking at you, G-Dragon! (You’ve got wayyy too many Autotune tracks!) I understand that some songs benefit greatly and listeners marvel with wonder. But after awhile, you come to realize that it’s getting quite old and then there’s a thousand other ways to add effects with vocals without using autotune or melodyne. All songs in 2009 on the radio started to sound exactly the same, and they still do!



BoA’s use for Autotune: I’d say I Did It for Love is a great reason for autotune. It has a great stutter effect, I love that song. BUT, the rest of the album could have benefited from not using it, because it started to sound more generic in other songs. Your preciously beautiful vocals were masked by a machine.

The time finally came in the summer when autotune was used more creatively:

Fortunately, in the mid 2009 era, a few Kpop artists team came up with a better way to process vocals. A good example is Brown Eyed Girls’ Abracadabra. The song alternated between filtering the vocal to sound like a telephone machine, then to stuttering for a few seconds, then back to Autotone, then back to clean. And indeed Autotune was was not applied the entire song. Son Dam Bi and After School’s used a very unique wind pipe filter on the vocals to alternate with autotune. Can you say.. AMOLED Can’t do it without effects!! Between that and the double stuttering, panning across the stereo spectrum and contrasting with plain vocals, this effect was used very creatively. Take notice it was not the whole song.

My great producer brothers, are you out of ideas? KVRAUDIO has a great selection of thousands of FREE home brewed vocal effects that you can get for your home or work studio.

So I give you all a challenge. Try using other digital effects besides autotune or melodyne. You might find something golden that change the way music is and make a new trend! There should be plenty of dance compatible filters around. Happy composing!

I could help you out Lillian with Filipino music. I will warn you now, it’s pretty cheesy in the ballad section and might be hard to get into since they rely more on voice and lyrics than entertainment (catchy songs/melody, dancing, and all that mainstream stuff to suck you in). But their alternative rock bands are good. Also, a lot of them are fluent in english so they have english songs you could listen to. Here’s a few artists/bands (mainly mainstream to get you into them):

Lea Salonga: You most likely know her by her singing voice for Jasmine and Mulan in the Disney movies
Sarah Geronimo: Pop star with the vocal chords. She got signed after winning a singing competition (similar to American Idol).
Regine Velasquez
Rachelle Ann Go
Nina Girado
Rico Blanco: He’s also in the band Rivermaya.
Hale
Callalily
Cueshe
6 Cycle Mind

Again, this is a really small list. There’s tons more Filipino music out there to be discovered. Hope this helps.


New Year’s Resolution proposal: No Autotune in 2010- I agree!

My New Year’s Music Resolution-From China, Khalil Fong is a good artist to start with.

Kdrama Resolution #3: Eat more/watch more Pasta!- I have not been up on my kDramas like I should.

Ningin’s New Year’s Resolutions for 2010- I don’t make them because I never get it done.

Kdrama Resolution No. 2: Drive cautiously, try not to lose memory-Again, I need to catch up on my Korean Dramas.

Top 5 New Year’s Resolutions G-Dragon should consider-I definitely agree with everything in this article.

Chinese/Taiwanese: Fahrenheit (popular boy band), Jolin Tsai, SHE, (although...these that I mentioned are very mainstream and not that great).

Japanese: Ikimonogakari, Angela Aki (looks like a Japanese Tina Fey), Aqua Timez, Abingdon Boys School, GReeeeN, Miho Fukuhara, Yoshida Brothers

Colombian: Juanes

Spanish: David Bisbal

Korean: The Trax, Nemesis. those are the only 2 Krock bands I know of. I recommend both of them too :D

I, too, want to start listening to different music, mainly Thai and Vietnamese. I think its easiest when listening to a different country’s music to start with the most mainstream stuff and work your way into the more indie/underground/very talented people kind of songs. thats what I did when I began listening to Japanese and Korean music.

Lol phew.. I was a bit worried on what the new prerequisites were to become a boyfriend to someone this year in 2010...Thanks for the new prereqs.

I mean surely I could fly a girl around MY OWN Island (reference Boys Over Flowers) While letting her use a $25,000 dress just for one date.. You know and then take her on evening dinner that night at a 5 star restaurant, and all while having a fireworks show that creates a HUGE heart with a plane that says “Saranghae” just at the right moment while we kiss under a blue moon.

And that’s why I want to date a rich guy. Haha kidding kidding.
